The Conflict

Prelude

The War of Brothers began with the return of Prince Damon Regalis, who had been exiled after fleeing the Battle of Kil’Dorei. Damon harbored a deep resentment for his family, particularly his brother, King Tyril Regalis, who had ascended to the throne of Arailia after the abdication of their father, King Keryth. Despite being offered half of Arailia by his brother in a final attempt to prevent war, Damon refused and launched a devastating rebellion against Tyril. Damon’s return marked the culmination of years of bitter conflict and the growing influence of dark powers within Arailia. He had become a figure of dark ambition, manipulating those around him, and it was clear to him that the throne could only be his through violence and betrayal.

Deployment

Damon’s forces were comprised primarily of his own loyal supporters, many of whom had been recruited from the shadowy corners of Arailia, alongside corrupted soldiers and followers who had been swayed by his manipulative nature. Damon’s forces were well-equipped, and they moved quickly, striking with brutal force against any that opposed him.
King Tyril, who had been fighting to maintain peace and unity within Arailia, had few soldiers loyal to him, and his strength was significantly weakened by Damon’s betrayal. The forces that remained with Tyril were mostly made up of his trusted allies, some noble houses, and those loyal to the Regalis bloodline. In the face of this overwhelming threat, Tyril’s forces fought for survival and the protection of his family’s legacy.

Battlefield

The battle was fought primarily at the heart of Arailia, within the royal capital and the surrounding lands. The most crucial clash took place near Archdale Palace, a symbol of the Regalis family’s long reign. The palace became a symbol of the conflict, as Tyril’s final defense against his brother’s army occurred within its fortified walls.
The surrounding countryside became a battleground as well, with skirmishes breaking out between Damon’s forces and Tyril’s supporters. Damon’s forces had the advantage of surprise and numbers, moving quickly and decisively, while Tyril’s forces had to defend against multiple fronts, with the palace being the key point of defense.

Conditions

The battle was fought under the pressure of emotional and personal betrayal, with Tyril’s forces feeling the sting of a brother’s treachery. The skies above were filled with a heavy sense of foreboding, mirroring the dark turn that the war had taken. The weather was stormy, with winds howling and rain falling heavily, adding a grim atmosphere to the already tragic conflict.
Tyril’s forces were heavily outnumbered, and the morale of his men was faltering as the battle wore on. Meanwhile, Damon’s forces, though they too faced the toll of battle, had a significant advantage.

The Engagement

The engagement began with Damon’s forces attacking key strongholds and fortifications in an effort to draw Tyril’s forces into the open. Damon’s strategic knowledge of Tyril’s tactics and the personal connection they shared made him a dangerous adversary. Tyril, however, refused to back down, leading his remaining forces with the honor and courage that had defined his reign.
The battle culminated at Archdale Palace, where Damon’s forces breached the walls and engaged in close-quarters combat. Damon himself confronted his brother, and despite Tyril’s desperate defense, he was ultimately struck down by Damon’s treachery. With the king’s death, the forces of Arailia fell into disarray, and Damon took the throne.
Though Damon’s victory was certain, it came at the cost of brotherly ties and his own soul. The war, steeped in betrayal, left deep scars on both families. The legacy of King Tyril’s death would echo for generations, with the people of Arailia mourning their fallen king while fearing what would come under Damon’s rule.

Outcome

Damon’s Usurpation: Damon successfully claims the throne of Arailia, but his victory is tainted by the fratricide of King Tyril. The immediate aftermath sees Damon consolidating power, but the kingdom is left in turmoil, with many loyal to Tyril either fleeing or going into hiding. • Chaos in Arailia: With Tyril’s death, Arailia is thrown into political disarray. The loyalists to the late king struggle to accept Damon as the rightful ruler, and there are factions vying for power. • Mass Executions of Loyal Nobles: Damon hunts down and kills all nobles loyal to Tyril, including House Naemoira, House Theos of Thane, and House Variel. These families, along with many smaller nobles (such as high guards, earls, and other prominent figures), are executed, their families wiped out in a purge. The brutal killings send a chilling message to anyone who might consider opposing his rule.

Aftermath

Damon’s Paranoia and Oppression: Damon, though victorious, rules with suspicion and fear. His reign is marked by paranoia, leading to the conscription of civilians, including women and lower-income individuals, and the suppression of any opposition. • Weakening of Arailia’s Magic: Under Damon’s rule, the natural magical wards of Arailia begin to fade as he secretly severs the kingdom’s connection to the natural magic of the world, weakening the kingdom’s defense against external threats. • Exile of Tyril’s Allies: Many of Tyril’s key supporters either go into exile or are hunted down by Damon’s forces. The split between factions loyal to the Regalis family deepens. • Support of the Hadeon and Handrania Houses: Damon solidifies his position by aligning with House Hadeon and House Handrania, two noble houses with significant military power and wealth. Many powerful merchants also back Damon, enabling him to form mercenary armies to further enforce his control over Arailia. • Great House Odraria’s Neutrality: The Great House Odraria, a powerful and influential family, refuses to take a side in the conflict. This neutrality is viewed by some as a betrayal, and by others as a wise decision to avoid the bloodshed that comes with the war.

Historical Significance

Tyril’s Death as a Turning Point: The death of Tyril is a pivotal moment in Arailian history. It marks the end of an era of stability and prosperity, plunging the kingdom into a period of fear, disillusionment, and eventual decline. Damon’s reign represents a shift in political power, from a leadership that sought unity to one that rules with fear and control. • Damon’s Rise to Power: Despite the initial instability following the War of Brothers, Damon eventually solidifies his rule, but the cost of his brother’s death leaves the kingdom fractured. His ascension, though initially accepted by many, leads to long-term resentment and distrust.

Tyril’s death, and the manner in which it was carried out, becomes a symbol of the destructive power of jealousy and ambition. It becomes a bitter chapter in Arailian history, leading to mistrust in the monarchy for generations. • The Wiping Out of Tyril’s Loyalists: The brutal elimination of Tyril’s supporters, including entire noble houses, marks Damon’s reign with an air of terror. The displaced families become a source of resentment, and many escape to neighboring lands, where they form secretive opposition groups.

Histories and Prophecies: Historians and scribes document the events of the War of Brothers, though many of the official accounts are revised under Damon’s rule to present the events in a more favorable light. Prophecies that predicted the fall of the Regalis line and the coming of a dark age for Arailia gain popularity in folklore.

Technological Advancement

The War of Brothers does not see significant technological advancements, as the focus of the battle is political and personal rather than technological or magical. However, the use of magic by the kingdom and the dragon riders is gradually phased out under Damon’s rule, with magical research being suppressed.
