Hearthlings
Hearthling dragons are small, warm-blooded dragons known for their unique bond with human settlements. They thrive in the comfort of hearth fires and are treasured as companions in family homes. Revered for their gentle temperament and practical abilities, Hearthlings are often regarded as guardians of the home.
Physical Description
Hearthling dragons are no larger than a medium-sized dog, with smooth, ember-like scales that range from deep red to glowing orange. Their scales shimmer faintly in the light, reminiscent of a flickering flame. They possess small, compact wings that are primarily used for short flights around the home rather than prolonged travel. Their horns, like most dragons, differ by sex—males boast four short, curved horns, while females have two sleek, spiraled horns. Their claws, although sharp, are primarily used for gripping surfaces and gentle handling rather than combat.
Behaviour and Temperament
Hearthling dragons are docile and affectionate, making them ideal companions for families. They enjoy curling up near fireplaces, often basking in the warmth, and emit a gentle heat themselves, enough to keep a room cozy during cold nights. These dragons are incredibly social within their environment and thrive on human interaction. They show affection by resting their heads on loved ones or softly nuzzling hands and faces.
Despite their calm demeanour, Hearthlings are highly territorial. They will defend their home and family from perceived threats, using their ability to emit short bursts of concentrated heat as a deterrent.
Abilities
Hearthlings possess a minor connection to Life Fire, which allows them to radiate a comforting warmth. This ability is entirely harmless and serves as a natural way to maintain a warm environment. Additionally, Hearthlings are adept at keeping pests like rodents or insects at bay, either through their heat emission or sharp reflexes.
Diet
Hearthling dragons primarily consume small prey, such as rodents and insects, but they also enjoy consuming wood chips or ash from hearth fires, which seem to replenish their energy. Many owners supplement their diets with scraps of meat or specially prepared meals that include charcoal and other minerals.
Habitat
Hearthlings are uniquely adapted to live in human homes, particularly those with open hearth fires or warm spaces. They are most commonly found in family dwellings, stables, or communal inns where they have access to warmth and companionship. These dragons create small nests from blankets or firewood near their chosen hearth.
Reproduction and Lifespan
Hearthling dragons, like most dragons, reproduce asexually, with the female laying eggs that the male fertilises. The eggs are small, round, and glowing, resembling embers from a fire. They are carefully protected by both parents until they hatch, which takes approximately two years. Hearthlings have a lifespan of 700–1,000 years, living long lives of warmth and companionship.
Cultural Significance
In many cultures, Hearthling dragons are symbols of home, warmth, and familial bonds. They are often given as gifts to newlywed couples or young families as a sign of prosperity and protection. Hearthlings are considered sacred in some traditions, with their eggs being used in blessing ceremonies to ensure a safe and happy home.
