Swamp Swan

While these creatures are vegetarians, their vicious nature makes them more a threat than many a predator out there. They are in fact more dangerous than Dire Wolves, capable of defeating them in single combat while not leaving the ground. A flock will even defeat a wolfpack with ease, as most will focus their attacks on a single enemy.   Fortunately they mostly live in mucky waters, only coming to clean rivers when food is too scarce at their own territory. And make no mistake, territory is how they see it. Where many animals only attack if one approaches them or their nest, these swans will attack you if you get even close to wherever they like to stay. And if a fight doesn't go their way, they unleash a harrowing honk that sounds as if it echoes and goes through one's very bones.   Despite this, non-lethal approaches are advised to keep them at bay. They are not malicious and do not aim to kill, they're just bloody vicious bastards.

Subjugation
There is a big difference in when one has to take down a pair, or an entire flock. The same equipment is advised, including some good earplugs, but the tactics are completely different. Against a single pair, surrounding them is best. Use shields to draw their fury, then jump on them to wrestle them to the ground and grab their necks to drag them away.   Against a flock, the best solution is a massive battleline of tower shields. Due to their aggression, the swans will simply charge from the front. Have the shields block them, then kneel down. The second line must hit their wings with clubs to stun them, then weighted nets and double-pronged spears can be used to hold them down. By using multiple lines, if they honk they won't be able to stun everyone.
Nature
Vicious, loyal, territorial, dumb, are the best terms to describe these creatures. Anything large enough to be considered a threat, they attack at once. They may eventually flee, but only if all of them are still standing. Capture or kill one, and it becomes a fight to the death, in which they unleash their horrible honks.   On the bright side, the creatures can learn. If something resists their attacks, they may tire of trying and not bother again. Or if you suppress them well enough without giving them any lasting injuries, they may also decide you're not enough of a threat to bother with.   So remember, if avoiding them is notan option, the best way of dealing with them is an excessive amount of brute force, albeit non-lethal. Again, they are vicious but not cruel, so treat them in kind.

I really like the PoV of this article, a nice touch for it to be written as instructions on how to best deal with them if encountered.   I hear many say geese are vicious (though here where I live both wild and domesticated ones are pretty placid?) but holy heck swans are terrifying.

These articles are basically all written by organizations for others to use, such as Knights for soldiers, hence the subjugation-instructions.   Crap I forgot to mention their honk! 1sec.

You had me at "harrowing honk" and didn't let go. By the time I got to "Vicious, loyal, territorial, dumb," I loved these guys and was scared of them in equal measure, so to get that little laugh from the word "dumb" was an unexpected delight. Well done!

Now it's time for the awkward wave.
