Strange Dreams

Hidden Meanings

"The dreaming mind possesses neither reason nor madness. It speaks instead in symbols borrowed from memory and stitched together by meanings that refuse to exist while we are awake."
— Dr. Alistair Vey, On the Architecture of Dreams
Dreams are among the most personal experiences a character can have. They can be ordinary reflections of the previous day's events, strange collections of impossible imagery, glimpses of forgotten memories, or something far more significant. Most dreams mean nothing at all. A few may change the course of an entire adventure.   The dreams on this table are intentionally open to interpretation. A result might be nothing more than an odd night's sleep, a symbolic reflection of a character's thoughts, or a genuine omen sent by magic, a deity, or another supernatural force. Whether a dream carries hidden meaning or is simply the mind wandering in sleep is entirely up to the DM.   This table exists to answer one of the most common questions at the game table: "What did I dream about?" Rather than inventing a dream from scratch, the DM or player can roll for inspiration and build from the result if desired.   Some dreams may become important later. Others may never matter again. Both are equally valid. A seemingly prophetic dream can prove to be nothing more than coincidence, while the most mundane dream imaginable might contain the one detail that becomes meaningful months later.   Use these dreams as lightly or as heavily as suits your campaign. Sometimes a dream is simply a dream. Sometimes it is the beginning of a story.

d100 Strange Dream
You spent an entire day trying to remember your own name.
Every door you opened led back to the room you had just left.
You climbed a staircase that never seemed to end, yet somehow reached the top.
The stars slowly drifted across the sky until they formed a face watching you.
You found yourself speaking fluently in a language you have never heard while awake.
Every mirror reflected someone else instead of you.
You sat at a banquet where every guest wore your face.
Rain fell upward into dark clouds.
A raven politely asked you for directions.
You planted a pebble, and by morning it had grown into a towering tree of crystal.
The moon cracked open like an egg.
Every candle in a city extinguished at the same moment.
You wandered through a library where every book contained your memories.
Fish swam lazily through the air as though it were water.
Your shadow refused to follow you.
A child handed you a key, then vanished before you could thank them.
You watched flowers bloom, wither, and bloom again in moments.
You were the only person who could not hear the beautiful music everyone else was dancing to.
A mountain slowly stood up and walked away.
You discovered footprints that appeared a few steps ahead of you instead of behind.
Every clock counted backward.
A fox invited you to afternoon tea.
You crossed a bridge made entirely of glass feathers.
Snow fell on only one side of the road.
You met an older version of yourself who refused to answer questions.
Every book you opened had blank pages except for your name.
You walked through a forest where every tree whispered secrets to the others when you passed.
The ocean was perfectly still, as though carved from polished stone.
You were searching desperately for something but never learned what it was.
Every bird flew backward.
You discovered a city built inside the shell of an enormous snail.
Your reflection smiled a few moments after you did.
Someone kept calling your name from behind you, but no one was ever there.
You watched an eclipse that revealed a second sun behind the first.
Your footsteps bloomed into flowers.
A cat sat upon a throne and everyone treated it like a king.
Every road led uphill regardless of which direction you traveled.
A giant hourglass slowly filled with stars instead of sand.
You opened a chest filled with hundreds of tiny locked doors.
Every person you met seemed to know a joke you didn't.
A river flowed through the sky overhead.
You found your childhood home standing in the middle of a desert.
Every spoken word appeared as colorful butterflies before fading away.
The wind carried pages from books that had never been written.
You attended your own birthday celebration, but everyone else was centuries older than you.
The sun rose in the west, paused, then quietly set again.
A deer bowed politely before disappearing into mist.
Every staircase descended into open sky.
You carried a candle whose flame cast no light but revealed hidden doors.
An enormous turtle asked if you had arrived on time.
Every statue slowly turned its head to watch you pass.
You found a village where everyone had forgotten how to speak, yet conversations continued normally.
Your hands became covered in glowing constellations.
You wandered through an endless orchard where every fruit contained a tiny landscape.
A friendly skeleton insisted it recognized you from somewhere.
You watched the seasons change with every step you took.
Every window looked into a different world.
You climbed into the branches of a tree that reached beneath the earth.
The clouds floated beneath your feet.
A butterfly landed on your hand and spoke your greatest fear aloud.
Every bell rang at once, though none had ropes attached.
You discovered a market where memories were bought and sold like fruit.
A giant snail patiently delivered letters across a mountain range.
The sea receded to reveal an endless staircase descending into darkness.
Every candle flame burned blue except yours.
You found yourself walking through your own shadow.
The stars slowly fell into a lake one by one.
An empty suit of armor asked you to dance.
Every tree in a forest leaned toward a single point on the horizon.
A wolf politely apologized before stealing your shoes.
You discovered an inn where everyone had been waiting specifically for you.
Every portrait blinked when you looked away.
You floated through a city built upside down beneath floating islands.
A staircase was being built one step at a time just ahead of your feet.
Every candle you lit became a tiny bird and flew away.
You found a crown resting on an empty chair in the middle of a forest.
Your heartbeat echoed like a drum across distant mountains.
A bridge introduced itself before allowing you to cross.
The moon slowly descended until it rested upon a nearby hill.
You were asked to judge a contest between clouds.
A tiny mouse carried an impossibly large lantern through a cave.
Every raindrop contained the reflection of a different face.
You found a door standing alone in an open field, but it opened onto another field.
An ancient oak apologized for growing in the wrong place.
You discovered your footprints had been following someone else all along.
A flock of fish migrated across the evening sky.
Every mountain had a single enormous eye that remained peacefully closed.
You played chess against someone whose pieces moved before either of you touched them.
A river asked you not to forget its name.
Every star disappeared except one that grew steadily brighter.
You climbed into the sky using a ladder made of birds.
A garden bloomed entirely with glass flowers that chimed in the wind.
Someone handed you a sealed letter addressed in your own handwriting.
Every road in the world met at a single lonely tree.
The ocean quietly folded itself into the shape of a sleeping dragon.
You reached the end of a rainbow and found an empty chair waiting for you.
A masked stranger thanked you for something you had not yet done.
You watched your shadow walk away without you, then wave goodbye.
Every person you met carried a candle, but none could explain why.
You awoke within the dream, only to discover someone standing beside your bed whispering, "Don't wake up yet."

"Dreams never ask whether something makes sense. They ask whether it feels true, and somehow that's even more unsettling."

I'm definitely going to use this! I love how they're easy to use and describe without eating up session time, especially if you need one dream to move the plot.

Exactly, one less thing to get hung up on. Maybe it'll be useful, and if not, who cares. :)
