"We spend our youth chasing distant stars, only to learn too late that the light which guided us was always waiting beside the hearth."
Every hero has someone whose opinion matters more than anyone else's. It might be a beloved parent, a lifelong friend, a trusted mentor, a spouse, a rival who earned their respect, or even someone they have never met. Whether that relationship is loving, complicated, broken, or long since lost, it has helped shape the person they have become.
This table is intended to answer a simple but revealing question: "Who matters most to your character?" Roll on the table whenever you want to quickly establish an important relationship or when the story calls for someone whose approval, safety, or judgment carries unusual weight.
The result is only a starting point. It establishes who occupies that place in the character's life, but the nature of the relationship is left entirely to the player and DM. The person who matters most might be alive or dead, nearby or far away, someone the character sees every day or someone they have not spoken to in years. They may be a source of strength, regret, inspiration, obligation, or all of those things at once.
Like any element of a character's background, this relationship can remain a small piece of roleplaying flavor or become central to the campaign. A single name on this table might eventually become an ally, a quest giver, a hostage, an adversary, or simply the reason a character refuses to give up when everything else is lost.
