Character Memories

You Suddenly Remember Something

"A life is measured less by what we remember than by what we never managed to forget."
— Mara Snow, wandering archivist
Memories shape every character long before the adventure begins. Some are joyful, others painful. Some are so ordinary they would never be mentioned unless someone asked, while others remain vivid decades later for reasons even the character may not fully understand.   The memories on this table are intentionally broad and open to interpretation. A result might describe a defining moment from childhood, a fleeting interaction that left an unexpected impression, or an otherwise unremarkable event that simply stayed with the character throughout their life. The details surrounding each memory are left for the player and DM to decide.   This table exists to answer another common question at the table: "What does this remind me of?" or "What's a memory my character has?" Rather than inventing a recollection on the spot, the DM or player can roll for inspiration and expand upon the result if it suits the moment.   A memory rolled today doesn't have to become a major part of a character's history. It might simply add texture to a conversation, explain a reaction, or provide a brief moment of roleplaying. On the other hand, an apparently insignificant memory may later become surprisingly meaningful as the campaign unfolds.   Use these memories as little or as much as your game demands. Sometimes they're nothing more than a glimpse into a character's past. Sometimes they're the reason that character becomes who they are.
