Cerium

Cerium is a soft, silvery metallic element most often found within complex mineral ores that contain several rare metals mixed together. Though it tarnishes quickly when exposed to air, cerium is highly valued by alchemists and artificers for its remarkable tendency to produce sparks when struck or scraped. Small fragments of cerium can ignite with bright flashes, making it an important material in fire starting tools, ignition mechanisms, and certain alchemical devices designed to produce controlled bursts of flame. Because of this property, artificers sometimes incorporate cerium into enchanted lighters, signal flares, or emergency fire kits carried by explorers and adventurers. In laboratories, powdered cerium is occasionally used in reactions that require sudden heat or a reliable source of sparks to begin a transformation. While not especially rare compared to some other unusual metals, cerium’s reliable ignition properties have made it a practical and widely respected element among craftsmen who work with fire and controlled combustion.
