Go'barr Species in Trilogy | World Anvil

Go'barr

With Teeth

Although modern Humans would likely consider the Go'barr to be the stuff of nightmares, the goblins are, first of all, natives of the waking world, and, secondly, often just as horrified at Humans' tiny mouths and dull, dead eyes.

There are similarities between the species. They are both social, tetrapodal creatures with an upright gait and a strong tendency towards clannishness and infighting. It is where those similarities end that the horror begins.

Go'barr, like all of the Cthonic Aevi, were initially fully subterranean. Their glowing eyes, like a pair of hot coals smoldering within twin pits within their skulls, cast dim light upon their surroundings. With their ability to perceive their environment lit by only distant stars, this enables them to navigate caves and tunnels without any form of mechanical illumination. While they could not reliably make a distance attack, this allows packs of goblins to strike from the darkness with only the glow of their eyes visible and has been the source of many tales of terror among the Anim.

The mouth of the Go'barr commands its skull, fully a third of the entire cranium dedicated to the wide, toothsome grin. Go'barr do not naturally have a mouthful of sharp fangs, but some of their number have taken to filing their impressively large teeth into wicked points. Whereas a human head to body ratio is about one-to-eight, for Go'barr is is closer to one-to-five. So much of their anatomy is commanded by their large mouths and highly expandable stomachs, one might assume correctly that food is a central part of their existence.

Go'barr history is long and bloody. Again, similar to Humanity. A primary difference is how often the conqueror consumed the conquered and the frequency with which such gluttony was the decisive blow. Go'barr who considered themselves more civilized eventually abandoned such murderous macrophagy.

Now they cook them first.

As members of the Unseelie Court, there is not likely to be found among their number an individual who is righteous and pure of heart, but even in the darkness there are deeper shadows. The Go'barr divide themselves into three great tribes and thence into clans. The tribes are the Redcaps, the Kobolds and the Hob. Of these, the Redcaps are the most malicious, clinging tightly to the old ways.
