Draconic Magic

Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Draconic Magic is a form of primal magic and the precursor of arcane and word magic. Draconic magic is deeply intertwined with dragons and is usable by some sorcerers.
Magic Use
While it was supposedly conducted and supervised by Io, today, draconic magic is highly supervised by three deities: Bahamut, Lendys and Tiamat.

Manifestation

Draconic magic is a broad term than refers to the magical abilities, properties, and nature of dragons; therefore, when discussing draconic magic, scholars usually consider three subtypes.

Spells

Dragons are capable spellcasters, and are able to wield magic the same way mortal species can. However, these spells, which would usually be categorized as arcane or divine, are primal in their nature.   When sorcerers of a draconic bloodline cast spells, these spells are arcane rather than primal; while they possess the innate magical qualities of their ancestor, they lack the fundamental nature of dragons.

Salient Magic

Salient magic refers to the dragon’s magical abilities and qualities. These may include spell-like abilities and a dragon's breath weapon, but may also manifest in other ways.

Ambient Magic

Ambient draconic magic is the dragon’s influence over their surrounding by their mere presence. Ambient magic is observed only in adult or older dragons, and seems to function even within dead magic zones.
Examples
  • Subtle changes in the ecology or topology surrounding a dragon’s lair, such as overgrowth or decay of plants.
  • An old dragon’s hoard, if slept on by the dragon, grows on its own.
  • Dragons gain intangible yet meaningful benefits correlated with the size of their hoard.
  • A dragon’s name is magical in nature, and true dragons posess inherent and immediate knowledge of another true dragon’s full name.
  • Some scholars argue that, physically speaking, the wings of most dragons should not be able to generate enough lift for them to fly; the wingless serpentine dragons ability to fly is often cited as support for this claim. This topic is highly debated.
