The spell-construct had been traveling this way for centuries, always bringing a message with unerring skill to the right being. Only a few times had it been thwarted, usually by the target being on another plane. This was odd, the creature was not mortal, and had no concept of death. It still understood that the burnoosed man in front of it, its eyes recently dark, could not understand the message it carried, nor supply a response. And so it knew its contractual obligation:To return to the sender and let them know the message hadn't been received. The large knife through the target's neck had seen to that. The large, red stone heart that served as a pommel was distinctive, the caster would want to know about that... It returned, covering hundreds of leagues in a few moments, its speed a job requirement that dated to back when their kind was used as messengers during the primordial war. Dodging a third circle demon was quite more difficult than dodging one of these slow mortals...
