Laura Palliser

Officer Serge Gontran of the SPVM(City of Montreal Police Service) was interrogating passers-by near a trendy club on St-Denis. "Sleepy looking isn't she? No, I haven't seen her..."   The locals hadn't seen anyone with her description, but then, her clothes were not club attire, so he was probably looking in the wrong place. However, looking into the book reading community in the nearby second hand bookstores had been a disaster, none of them being particularly chatty with one another, and one in three being ill-disposed to cooperate with the police until he told them she was plainly missing, then they all wanted to help, but had no useful information.   He entered the last place on his list, a Mexican dive known only as "The Z". The locals loved the cheap food apparently, because it was packed.   "Hey, Antoine, you're my only hope, seen anyone matching this portrait?" He showed the owner, an unlikely mix of French and Mexican Ancestry, the ai-generated sketch."   "Oh, that's Laura, she was here... last week, let me ask Carlos."   "Carlos, you seen Laura lately?"   "Not since last week, she said she was busy with research. Why?"   "She's attracted official notice." He pointed back to Serge.   "She's officially been missing for four days now." Serge replied back. "She come here often?"   "She used to come here daily. Her and Enrique, my cook, go to school together. Carlos, when's Enrique's next shift?"   "He should be here, but he's doing a no-show."
Meanwhile, four hundred metres from where they were talking, in an ancient building that had preserved wood carvings from the time of the Great Peace of Hochelaga, Enrique was tied up.   "Corazon, please, let me go."   Laura didn't seem to care. Or it would be more accurate to say, whoever was in control of Laura had different ideas. Enrique was tied, naked, across a seven-pointed star sacred to dread Cthulhui, the Atame Laura kept to hand left Enrique no doubt what kind of ritual it was, as well. The least of dread Cthulhui's minions, famously known as the Harhui, it appeared as a young girl, helpless, vulnerable, to get its target alone. Once it was out of sight, it revealed its nature as pure spirit, with no physical body to contend with, and a mind of pure malice, made to control others, those others had no real chance to escape, unless, like Laura, they were trained sorcerers, with a mind trained to follow and understand magical currents..
