Gothic Romance Plot - The Vampire Princess and the Servant

The "Vampire Princess" and "Servant" (a human) meet during a human group of Vampire Hunter's attack on the Vampire's castle. During the battle, the head Vampire and greatest hunter kill one another. The death of their leader starts a sucession war among the remaining Vampires.   The Vampire Princess, who cared little for this, is now thrown into danger from the other Vampire factions vying for the top position. She aims to attain freedom for her specific clan, without losing her own freedom.   Alongside her the "Servant" - who was captured following the pairs encounter during the battle - gets pulled in for his own survival. He wants to be free of his capture (and accidental "servitude") to get back to his family to protect them. Though he finds the only chance he has is through the Princess.   Can the two navigate the dangers of the "Vampire" court together without dying? Or worse, losing the freedom they crave?

Themes

Freedom is the main theme of the story, and many points link back to this. Specifically, the wider question is "What is Freedom worth?" as the answer differs massively depending on a character's position.   The "Servant" is obviously linked to this, he lost his freedom and his aim is to regain it. They're more straightforward, on the surface, due to wanting their direct freedom.   The "Princess" is linked to this through her "fate" or "role." She was born into her position and is essentally forced to fight for her survival and to maintain her position, both for herself and the Freedom of her specific clan.   Their belief of Freedom may cause problems for them. For example, they may free someone who becomes an enemy. The cost of/downside to Freedom being that you can't stop people from making choices you disagree with.   Other charactes can involve an opposing servant, who's willingly chosen to give up their freedom. The question is why would they do this? It would fundamentally oppose the lead's opinions, creating conflicts.   The villains, to oppose the protagonsts, have a theme of "control." This is clearest in their desires to take the head position, so "control" the other clans/territories.

Structure

Conflict

The primary conflict is the lead couples need for Freedom, contrasted against the antagonistic Vampire's need for Control. All the Vampire's are trying to become the new head, so conflicts arise within it.   In terms of generating conflict, there are some key "Plot Factories" 1) Source: The other Vampire's vying for control are the source of most external conflict in the story. The scope of this varies, some are simply verbally or socially antagonistic, while others will send their own Servants to remove competition, or in extreme cases take matters into their own hands.   2) Agency: All the Vampires have their own Servants they use to carry out actions for them. These servants often have boons or powers gifted by their Vampire. These provide fight opportunities for the leads, who will be targeted by them. Some examples include:   a) The Vampire Princess is challenged for her position, so has to fight a Servant to keep it.   b) It is suspected that the Vampire Princess hasn't actaully forced control onto "Servant" and try to exploit this, possibly to discredit her position.   c) Another Servant has willingly given up their Freedom to serve their Vampire. This contrasts "Servant" and could bring them into conflict.   d) One character may be a Golem created by a Vampire. They've never experienced Freedom so what does it mean to them? Is Freedom escaping the control of their creator, or is being able to carry out their innate goal more important to them? They are able to think for and decide on their own actions but is this limited to the scope of what they're allowed to do? Creates conflict as would the leads want to free them? Would it be better to destroy the Golem to give it "Freedom" or leave them in the position they're in?

Components

Goals

The primary goal of the two mains is to attain freedom. They're both trapped, both by circumstances and the hands they've been dealt.   The Servant is obvious, he's physically lost his freedom and is trapped in servitude for his own survivals sake. The Princess lacks freedom due to her family ties, and the "fate" she has to play inorder to protect others.   Their main goal in the plot is to survive the sucession war that's happening between different factions and

Moral Quandaries

"What is Freedom worth?" is the main moral question. How far are the characters willing to go to attain Freedom, what is their limits, can they do something to attain their own freedom if it means taking away someone elses? Should Freedom be allowed if people use it to opress others? What if someone wants to give up their Freedom, should you enforce it even if they would choose for you to not?

Relations

Protagonists

The "Vampire Princess" - one of our leads. Has a strong sense of justice and wants to protect people. She's the princess of a relatively minor family and their greatest representative in the sucession conflict. She can't abandon them, but it costs her own Freedom to do. She's relatively young, still technically in her "human years," but has been has to step into responsability at a younger age than expected.   "Servant" - the other lead. He is a minor/young/relatively new Monster Hunter. He isn't well versed in the world of Vampires, so is learning over the course of the story. He lacks freedom as he's trapped within the Vampire world. However he also lacks freedom for personal reasons.

Backdrops

Locations

The Vampire Lords Castle: The main setting for the story and where most of it takes place. While generally Gothic in style, it will have various rooms of different styles and purposes to allow variance. These are influenced by the "magic" of the castle to allow strange effects and different challenges.   For example, one area may be an aquairum, filled with water and bizzare aquatic species. Another would be the Gravity Cavern, where the normal effects of gravity are replaced based on the metals that grow in the caverns walls
