Prompt 8 - A Famous Explorer

Create a Famous Explorer who lived in your Region - an Explorer who one day decided to brave the mysterious barrier at the edges of your piece of Synergasia, only to disappear without a trace never to be heard from again. (Or... will they?!)

The various temporal zones of Synergasia are surrounded by mysterious "barriers". In most places, these manifest as dense walls of fog that are not affected by winds or other climate effects. On land, these barriers are usually found running along the tops of high mountain ridges, but they may also cut across the plains - and there are many that appear at sea as well. Many people have probably taken a step or two into the fog walls, or sailed vessels along the edges. As long as they don't go too deep, they can turn back without adverse effect. But anyone who ventures too deeply into the shrouded, mysterious walls of unnatural fog simply disappear and are never seen or heard from again. At least that's what the legends of every region on the surface of Synergasia say - whether we're talking about neolithic tribes or postmodern scientists.

This prompt challenges you to build out one such intrepid explorer. Perhaps they were known for blazing trails to the far reaches of your region. Perhaps they were a scientist studying the strange barriers. Perhaps it was some important personage (a king? a general?) that simply strayed too deep into the mists.

Just to let you all know where this is going... stepping across the actual temporal barrier transports you to a new place... to a place called "Wake", which is a world deep within Synergasia. Things are very different there. Your responses to this prompt may even become important persons there, but they will certainly be trying to find their way back to the world they knew. How that all works out will be up to one of our latest author contributors, BrandedTales.

Some suggestions (and limitations):
  • You should focus on a single person. Try to describe that person in as much detail as possible using the various tabs and fill-in areas of the Character template.
  • Your person may be the leader of an entire group that disappeared -- a ship captain, a military officer, or the head of an expedition for example, If you do this, include some information on the size and nature of the party in the vignette section of your article.
  • Make sure you include a brief description of the equipment and materials that your person was carrying with them when they disappeared. Include brief descriptions of weapons, armor, ammunition, scientific devices, etc. (FYI -- most of these will continue to work in Wake... for a while. But ammunition beyond arrows will not be available, nor will electrical or other futuristic power recharges, etc. But BrandedTales intends to have fun with things like "a revolver with one last bullet".)

Suggested Template

This time, template suggestion is easy -- you want to use the Character template. WIthin this template, the Generic, Naming, Mental, and Physical tabs will be very important to provide BrandedTales with enough description to understand what your intention for this character will be. If you don't describe these things, BrandedTales will have to in order to make this character a living, breathing part of Wake. The Personal and Social tabs are available as well, of course... feel free to describe as much of the character as possible. Stay away from the Deity tab, though... you're not defining a god... you're defining a person.

The Rules

The only rule in Synergasia is that your worldbuilding is restricted to your area unless you are actively collaborating with a neighbor. If you are collaborating, let us know and we'll make an entry in the Canon articles to notate it.

Other than that, your region is your world. Go for it!

There are no prizes... no judging. An article with 300 words is probably the low end of "enough to be useful", and more than 1500-2000 becomes a "wall of text" that will frighten people off. But there are no hard restrictions on minimum or maximum word count.

We will review your article and will, from time to time, extract certain facts to be included in your region's "Canon" article. These articles will be guides for you in the future, and for anyone you wish to collaborate with. ("Canon" will include things like capital cities... names of rivers, settlements, deities... major past or present events... wars... conquests... You get the idea.)
