Prompt 6 - Holidays

What are the major Holidays / Holy Days / Celebration Times in your region? (You can describe one or two... or you can describe an entire calendar full!)

As our real-world year winds down, there are quite a number of festivals, holidays, and other special times coming up on the calendar. So it only seems right that we start thinking about the holiday celebrations that take place in the many regions across Synergasia. This is another "wide open" prompt, and you may wish to complete more than one article to address it by the time you're finished being creative. But whether you complete one article describing a calendar full of special days, or a whole collection of articles detailing individual celebrations, the people in your little corner of Synergasia will have special days to look forward to.

There are a couple of important reminders about how Synergasia works for you to keep in mind:
  • We set up the "astrophysics" of Synergasia such that the planet has no tilt. This means that the days and nights do not get longer and shorter as a year progresses like they do here on earth. The sun rises and sets at the same time each day, and for any given latitude, it follows the exact same arc in the sky each day. (So "longest day" / "shortest day" commemorations wouldn't make much sense.)
  • There are seasons of warm and cold, though - because the planet orbits elliptically and moves nearer and farther from its sun. So there can be summer or winter themed holidays. There are times for planting and times for harvesting in agricultural societies.

Other things you might consider:
  • Are there any religious celebrations that are important? Birthdays or Death days of important religious figures (or even gods themselves)?
  • Are there any important political/nationalistic holidays? Founding of the kingdom? The queen's birthday? The signing of the Constitution?
  • Are there any important occupational holidays? Planting festivals? harvest festivals? Days that celebrate craftspersons?
  • Are the celebrations "universal" (at least within your region)? Or do different areas / cultures in your region have different celebrations? If so, how are these celebrations viewed by people of the other cultures or areas?

In case you need reminders about the calendar possibilities on Synergasia, here's the Clocks and Calendars article.

Submission Guidelines

  1. Make sure you're pointing to the Synergasia world when you create your article.
  2. The Suggested templates above are just that - suggestions. If you really think a different template is more appropriate, then use it. If you have a customized template that you want to use, then use it.
  3. In the event that your new article introduces something that changes something in your region's Canon article, please highlight this somehow. (A note in the footnotes will be sufficient!)

Suggested Template(s)

As with many of the prompts for Synergasia, there are a few different templates that may be appropriate depending on the approach you wish to take. If you are trying to define a particular holiday, and especially if you are focusing on the details of how that holiday is celebrated, then the Tradition template is probably the one you wish to select. But if you are focusing on religious traditions, the Religion template may be worth looking at. A celebration commemorating the signing of an importand document may use the Document template. There are other possibilities as well... use your imagination!

This may also be a chance for you to play with the Calendar and Timeline features of World Anvil if you haven't already delved into them. If you need help with these features (which can get confusing and frustrating), the Kahuna Quiet streams or the World Anvil Discord are great places to go for help.

The Rules

The only rule in Synergasia is that your worldbuilding is restricted to your area unless you are actively collaborating with a neighbor. If you are collaborating, let us know and we'll make an entry in the Canon articles to notate it.

Other than that, your region is your world. Go for it!

There are no prizes... no judging. An article with 300 words is probably the low end of "enough to be useful", and more than 1500-2000 becomes a "wall of text" that will frighten people off. But there are no hard restrictions on minimum or maximum word count.

We will review your article and will, from time to time, extract certain facts to be included in your region's "Canon" article. These articles will be guides for you in the future, and for anyone you wish to collaborate with. ("Canon" will include things like capital cities... names of rivers, settlements, deities... major past or present events... wars... conquests... You get the idea.)
