Perlins Nomenclature

Origins

The Perlins' society is based on martial traditions and an adult Perlins will have a society name and a familiar name.

Only close tribe members are allowed to use the familiar name of someone.

The familiar names are entirely derived from positive attributes given at birth by the dotting mother.
Perlins will often keep this name a secret or only tell their closest friends and family.

Society and Clan Names

The Perlins' society name will be drawn from heroic deeds and weapon names.
Added to the society name is the Perlin's clan name. 


Clan names are derived from geographical features and usually, describe what the clan lands look like.


The Perlins' society names reflect what their trade is and the rank within that guild or faction. 
The supreme dragon leader is called the Thane.
Just below the Thane will be his guards, usually called The Guard.

Thus, a Perlin who is part of the Thane's Guard will be addressed as Guard so and so. 

The current Perlin leader is Bravsword of Clan Treebeards and his right-hand man, Tailblod is part of his guard. They will be respectively referred to as  Thane Bravsword of Clan Treebeards and Guard Tailblod of Clan Treebeards.

Titles will change from clan to clan but in the main you will find that in the warrior class, there will be six titles, starting with:

• Squire
• Knight
• Bannerman
• Steward
• Marshall
• Commander or Middle-Thane (the clan's leader)
  
  

Example: a promising young warrior from the Clan Leafwaters might be called:  Knight Blueskin of Clan Leafwaters


Within the artisan guilds, the hierarchy is also very important and a similar five- rank system will be put in place:

• Apprentice
• Journeyman
• Craftsman
• Master
• Grandmaster

Example: an apprentice baker in clan Leafwaters would be called by its full name thusly: Apprentice (Baker) Lancewell of Clan Leafwaters

Nicknames

Perlin mothers give each dragonet of her brood a name of their own as soon as they are born.
This is the name that a baby dragonet will hear for the first sixth months or so of his life.

As soon as they are presented to the clan, they will acquire their society names.
However, very often, a dragon's mother or close relative will continue to call a dragon by their nickname or child's name.

Perlins will keep their child's names secret and only revealed it to the people who are closest to them.

Here are a few affectionate child's names a mother dragon might give to her brood: Litlescaley, Cutepaw, Pawsoft, Prettytail, Poptail.
