Francalia

What genre best describes what you have in mind?

The world of Francalia is a parallel fantasy French-flavoured world set in a similar time period as the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 19th century. The magic is fairly low-key and resides in the appropriation, knowledge, and use of magic rods which if obtained can give its bearer a powerful advantage during conflicts. There will also be Ritualists and Alchemists who unbeknown to the general public can access darker forces.   There are a few fantasy series based on the same time period, see:
  • The 'Temeraire' series by Naomi Novak
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temeraire_(series)
  • 'The Powder Mage Trilogy' by Brian McLellan

  •   What Mood and Theme do you plan to employ?
The mood is going to be fairly gritty as the country is heading rapidly towards civil war. I would like to keep it fun though, so gritty, not gloomy. I would like to bring a 'Je ne sais quoi' to the theme: I am hoping things will turn out to be quite passionate, and even tragic at times.

What time period/development era describes your area?
It is pre-industrial insofar that steam is not used to create technology. Guns and canons exist, hot air balloons have been discovered but that's pretty much it. Science and medicine are starting to make some headway spurred by 'enlightened' intellectuals that are fighting the tales of the old religion and want to see a brighter future for Francalie. They, of course, will be very much opposed in certain quarters.

What sort of geography do you need?

I would love to have a mountain range, a plain or two, a forest or two, as well as a few seas to play about with naval forces. A temperate climate will be ideal to mirror France's climate. To be honest, I am not fussed - I could even make it work with a jungle. :D

Are there any Major Conflicts you know you will include?

Francalia is mainly divided into two factions (and a few in-between): the Revolutionaries who have taken control of the King's lands and would like to set up a Republic and give the same rights (in the main) to everyone, and the reactionary forces led by the King and his vassals who would like very much to keep the status quo. To spice it up, there will be some duchies who are playing both sides and are waiting to see where the wind will blow.
