Cotes de Marins

Area:

Cote de Marins is the most northern state of Francalia. It is a wild country hotly defended in the past by the tribes that settled there.   It forms a triangle: stuck between the River Rieunan to the north and The Ocean shore. Most of the settlements are by the sea, taking advantage of the more clement martime climate.

Habitats

- Forest Taiga

The Taiga Forest of the Cote is one of the wildest parts of Francalia. Not many settlements exist in the deep, dark woods of the Marins.   If someone disappears from their home suddenly one morning and is not to be seen again, Francalian will often say: 'He's gone to the Marins'. At the edge of the forest, there will be a few settlements logging and trapping.   These goods will be sent directly to the ocean shore to be exported.

- Sea Plain

Most humans have settled on the cold sea plains of the Marins. Food is provided by rearing pigs and sheep who are able to survive in the more lenient weather by the ocean shore.   Fishing is also an important food source for the Marins people. Quite a few fish species can be smoked and dried.   If sheltered, the patates can grow there as well as the native brillac root, and there is a thriving crofting economy along the shore.   Seaweed is used to fertilize fields and keep the pastures fertile.

- The Coastline

The Marins' coastline has one or two large bays where small traditional harbours send the produce of the region to other parts of Alven. These would be mainly: wood, dried fish and furs. The seaweed is found in great quantities on the shores of Marins. The locals will dry the seaweed and sell them in bags as fertiliser to other communities further down the coast who do not have it in abundance.   The main two harbours on the Marins coastline are Portdefeu and Baie des Fous.   The last settlement and harbour on the northern coast before the wilds of the taiga forest is a small fishing harbour by the name of Saumure. This is where the ill-fated exploration expedition, led by Coralie 'Lison' Desfontaines sailed away from never to return.
