mutated -- meeting the goblin -- spk24

Hampton Getts frowned at the Goblin as it inspected the control panels and computers in the Cavern. "You said it understood you?" he quietly asked his co-worker.   "Yes, apparently, he's been studying "Uplander" languages for sometime."   "Are you sure THAT came out of the Cave?"   Patten nodded. "He's exquisite."   Hampton didn't think the Goblin warrented that term but he, it, was definately something large and scultped to look at. "It doesn't look mutated."   "Not at all."   "Why would I be mutated?" The Goblin asked as it turned from the main panel and faced them. He, it, wore a white lab coat and a pair of black glasses. "By all accounts it is you who should be mutated," it said with a very thick accent.   "Us?" Patten asked. "Why?"   "Because of all of the radiation and nuclear fallout from the constant wars."   "What wars?"   "The Great Nuclear Wars. The wars that drove my people into the mountains."   "Your people were enclosed in the mountains because of a disease," Patten told him. "sealed inside so the disease would die out."   "No," the Goblin gently refuted. "My people fled to the mountain and sealed themselves from the destruction happening out here."   "Shit," Hampton cursed. Ok, this situation just officially turned from "bad" to "really bad." If he didn't get that Goblin back into it's cave and reseal the door before the real reason that door was sealed was revealed, a lot more "bad" things could happen. Including painful interactions with well trained men in drab uniforms and Hampton didn't want to be involved in any of it.   This was supposed to have been an easy job. Guard an unopenable door and make sure it stayed closed like it's been for the last 1000 years. In fact, it had been an easy job until Patten showed up to replace Cobert. Cobert, who, like Hampton, enjoyed the benefits of the hefty paycheck the job brought, and let it end there.   Damn he missed Cobert.   Hampton looked at the pleasant and possibly jovial man patiently standing in front of he and Patten and shook his head.   Damn it! This would be so much easier if the Goblin was even slightly mutated.
