Forest of Memories
Created by Tyess
The name is not accurate. There are all kinds of environments in this world, some in the very edge of the atmosphere, some in the core of the planet. But most visitors have landed in some sort of forest and that’s how it was recorded in collective memory and books. Even the local fairies got used to the name. That designation, “fairy”, is not totally accurate either. The original fairies are earth beings (probably extinct or imaginary, you should ask the local fairies of winged humanoids, they would know), but they are quite famous all over the universe, and the inhabitants do look a lot like some pictures of earth fairies. And they, always accommodating, accepted to be called that. The purpose of everyone in this world is to avoid the extinction of species. Whenever a species disappears, the unwinged fairies in charge of that type of creature would look in the magical records and provide it to winged fairies so they can raise a few replicas in the right environment and later they reach for travelers who can take it to a place where they should thrive . They are not creators, not even good administrators, they just try their best to use their knowledge to protect species. It helps that some of them can magically access the knowledge of every species in the universe and the others are good geneticists. Besides, there are all kinds of environments here. While Fairies can live in any of them, they often locate in a favorite. Winged fairies can work with any species as soon as they are provided with the info. On the other hand, libraries are too extensive to know how to navigate all of it, so the librarians are specialized —usually in a group of creatures that could live in their area, but others have a wider range of species and travel a lot. Most species here are temporary, just waiting to find a home, and there are just a few of each at a time. Only the fairies are permanent inhabitants, but some of them leave for their own particular reasons, or to relocate creatures. They have no memory of childhood, or record of blood ties. As far as they know, they could be all siblings, and it doesn’t seem relevant. As for religion, they don’t have one, but some of them have favorites from the universe —especially those who study species that have them. The social structure is quite chaotic. Some live in small groups, some live on their own. In the areas with more population they have been planning to design some sort of government, but everybody is busy so it’ll have to wait. They take care of each other, though. They have no memory of their own species, but they are ageless and survive… anything so far. So, they are not worried about that. There is no abundance of any resource, just the necessary, and never too easy to access, mostly because they try to leave nature be. So far, no one has shown interest in invading or dealing with them, except some of the inhabitants of places where a species is needed or missed. But they won’t ask you anything in exchange for a creature, as long as you take them to a proper environment. And they will know if you don’t! The way they react when someone tries to “steal” a species, is another thing that makes them similar to Earth fairies: they can be…. creatively vindictive. What do they eat and wear and use to entertain themselves, if they have no economy at all? Well, it depends on the region where they live, and the particular traits for each of them. Mostly, they harvest and hunt the species around them. Some raise them. Some make exchanges with neighbors. Some don’t eat, or have enough fun with their work... maybe some don’t wear anything, but fortunately that has never been seen. Close neighbors, and other external details like suns and moons, are still to be decided.
