Player Primer

Infiltrate secret societies, discover forgotten magics and go musket-to-flame against selfish sorcerers, vampires and even the Si, in the 18th century urban fantasy adventure!
The year is 1768 - the Franco-Indian war that pitted the British and French colonies against one another has come to an end, and the whisper of the French revolution is heard only in the ear of fortune-tellers and sooth-sayers, at least for now. And yet, Europe, which for the last hundred years has become a melting pot of new peoples, resources and more, is bubbling over - not just politically, but magically.   You, brave Agents of the Society of Educated Gentlewomen, are tasked to protect the innocent and the "unveiled" from the accidental or intentional magical powers which swarm through London's docks. What secrets will you discover in this adventure both ancient and modern?

What is this?

The Society of Educated Gentlewomen is an 18th century urban fantasy adventure game. It uses a conversion of the simple Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition rules set to ALLOW

What can I play?

Blow people up as an alchemist, fling fireballs as a Sorcerer, or glide through the night as a Rogue - check out the full Player Classes list here.   If you're curious about extra flavour, check out the Player Backgrounds for the era-appropriate experiences your player character has had before the start of the game.

What kind of adventures will I go on?

Regardless of which class you select, all Player Characters begin as agents of the Society of Educated Gentlewomen. The goal of that institution is to protect the "unveiled" - those who are unaware of magic and its effects, and your party will be given assignments based on information that has reached the Society. These assignments may involve exploration, investigation and combat. You might be solving magical murders one week, uncovering a plot to assassinate the king the next, putting down eldritch smuggling rings and even thwarting the dastardly Les Immortelles.   However, there are many other factions in London and the wider world, and all know how to reward a useful character who knows how to get things done. Rival factions may ask you to look the other way, or maybe to pilfer, spy, cheat, or even to assassinate, all with the promise of rewards in gold, power and magic. And if you keep your ear to the ground, you may hear rumours of buried treasures, forgotten rituals and spells, and potions and technologies lost to modern man. Will you pass those rumours on to your society like a dutiful agent... or go in search of that power for your own ends?

Where can I play?

The Society of Educated Gentlewomen is seated in London, and that's where development of this game and its first adventures has begun. But there's no reason to stay there! If you or your DM wishes to create an enclave in your own city, then go for it!
