Motivations

Growing up as a stray, Vinay’s main motivation is to have a secure and comfortable “place.” He mostly grew up around the unfree serving court status people. But he’s from the lowborn and is familiar with their customs, attitudes, and mentality.
Vinay’s dream is to become a medic. His true dream is to become a doctor, but he won’t allow himself to think of that.

Family Background

Vinay is a stray, raised among the unfree servants of court status people, recently under Countess Elena. He’s just become a youth (when he meets Astra) which means he needs to find a “place” or be relegated to the ghettos or worse.

Relationships

With Astra

Vinay likes Astra. She’s only a bit older than him, but in a much higher social status. He’s happy to serve her as she provides a comfortable and reasonably pleasant “place”. His social status level increased significantly as her bonded aide. And this position gives him rights and privileges he wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.
Unknown to Astra, Vinay saw what happened when the portal pulsed. He saw the men being thrown back and her resultant weakness. He believes that she’s not a regular human, but isn’t sure what.
Vinay realizes that Astra doesn’t know what she is, but he believes she’s basically good. He can reassure her as she experiences doubt (as she’s learning about herself). He’s sure that she’s not a regular human. He’s figured out that she’s connected to portals. And there are rumors about that…

Derix doorman and Emotion Sone Vendor

Vinay has visited University many times. He’s heard about Derix and the doorman’s mesmerizing tricks. He’s seen the tricks used by others, but the doorman is particularly good so it took Vinay more time to realize.
Vinay has dealt with unscrupulous vendors on several occasions and watched others deal with them numerous other times. He recognized the vendor’s intent from how they acted.
