Perks

Perks represent a very important part of the System, and form the core secondary progression method that all progression paths deal with. Perks themselves are divided into a web-like net, known as the Perk Tree, and are chosen from the Perks section of the Corewalker Interface. Selecting perks requires the expenditure of Perk Points, which are awarded from the various progression paths.
The tree itself is further subdivided into many sections to cover a myriad of different archetypes and styles of perk, with about a fifth of the perk tree being distinctly non-combat focused perks, and the other aspects having a combat focus. Most perks are minor in nature, referred to as Minor Perks and generally increasing attributes by 5 (rarely 10) points, granting a 1% bonus to strength-based weapon damage, and so on as an example, but some perks - generally known as Major Perks - are much more influential, such as granting entirely new secondary attributes - such as the Life Leech attribute - or adding their own distinct powers of some description, which are generally active-use in nature.
The perk tree itself is very large, and people often find it intimidating, in particular because it's not currently known how many perks exist - the system almost seems to be adding more each time people come close to determining how many are present, though the reality might just be that people simply aren't close yet - and this is a big reason why the system itself allows for Perk Resets to be one of its more affordable options within the System Exchange, allowing Corewalkers to exchange experience to reset their perks and try new things.
In despite of this, while the number of perks isn't known, the baseline number of perks a Corewalker can obtain is known with solid confidence. In total, before progression paths are factored in, there are 25 perk points available based on someone's Core Level - 1 point for every 4 Core Levels, and with the progression paths factored in, class progression gets between 55 and 65 perk points (depending on ancestry classes), skill progression gets 65 perk points, and both cultivation and professions get 85 perk points, with the caveat that professions cannot spend their perk points on combat-based perks unless a profession ability says otherwise.
Below you will find a breakdown for how these figures are determined.
  • Classes. Perk points are awarded for each 5 levels a class has, with a bonus perk point awarded for reaching level 10 in a class, incentivising the complete levelling of a given class and giving a maximum of 3 perk points per class, for a maximum of 30 extra perk points if 10 classes are levelled to 10. Ancestry classes give an additional perk point upon being selected, which can raise the maximum by up to 10 perk points, depending on how many ancestry classes are obtained and levelled to maximum level.
  • Cultivation. Perk points are awarded each time a new phase of a cultivator's primary path is entered, for a maximum of 60 extra perk points with no restrictions on how they can be used, making cultivation by far the most rewarding progression method for perk points.
  • Professions. 2 perk points are awarded upon selecting a profession, with 2 more perk points being available at levels 5 and 10 of that profession, for a total of 6 perk points per maxed out profession. This gives a maximum of 60 extra perk points, like with cultivation, but these perk points cannot be spent on combat-based perks unless a profession ability grants an exception of some kind.
  • Skills. Perk points are awarded each time a skill reaches Refinement-10, up to a maximum of 40 skills. This grants a maximum of 40 extra perk points if all 40 skills are max-refined.

  • While these represent the maximum number of baseline perks available, they do not represent the total maximum number of perks, as a variety of other sources - items, classes, cultivation paths, skills, certain professions, and so on - can all grant additional perks beyond this maximum.
