The Legend of Wolf

When that howl is heard, the superstitious seek shelter

Wolf is a mythical creature who lives in the barren, desolate places of Owtdare. Wolf represents the fallow seasons of year as the land cools towards leaner and harder times.

Very few can claim to have actually seen Wolf, and many believe that to see him with their own eyes on the first day of Fallwane means they will not live to see the next spring. As the sun sets on the summer, Wolf's howl can be heard across the lands as he roams the wilderness and sets the world on a course for Winter. When that howl is heard, the superstitious seek shelter in their homes and light bonfires in their villages and towns to frighten him away.

Some say that Wolf is nothing but an old wives' tale designed to keep their children home on the long winter nights, and yet others say Wolf killed the Good King who ruled before the lands became barren and hard. But history proves that those who travel in the wilderness on the nights where those first howls are heard should find a safe Inn before dusk, because many times have slaughtered caravans been discovered the morning after Wolf's night.

The philosophers say that Wolf and the Great White Stag cannot exist without each other, and that if they ever were to meet and fight they would both be slain, and then where would the world be without the balance of the seasons?
