Sigil Settlement in Lost Waves | World Anvil

Sigil

Sigil is its own plane, existing on the outskirts of the outer planes. It wasn't created there as a result of the expansion of Realmspace but rather appeared during the First Breaking like a broken piece of a blade stuck in a wound. And like that blade, it is clear that Sigil is torn apart.   Geographically, Sigil is an immense city that sits on the insides of a curved tube. Looking up, you can see other parts of the city rather than a sky. The curve indicates that the plane should possibly be a torus shape of some kind, but the ends of the city dissolve into a mess of debris floating in a void that seems to go on forever.   When the plane was discovered after the First Breaking, most of it was simply empty. There were clear signs of people living there - some of them very alien to any known creature - but the individuals themselves seemed to have just vanished. The remaining ones were some of the races that have since become part of the world, such as the Gith. Those who were there claimed that they used to have access to an entire multiverse of worlds, but the gates to such seem to have vanished.   There are plenty of extraplanar gates around, however. All other planes are linked to Sigil in some places. The gates might require certain rituals, materials, or times to open - but there is always a way to get from anywhere to Sigil and vice versa. It's navigating this network without getting lost and then killed that's the tricky part.

Demographics

The exact number of any group living in Sigil is impossible to determine, partially because the city itself seems to transform itself to make it more confusing. What is interesting is the varied population. Devils live side by side with elves and elementals. The city itself seems to attack those who make too much of a deal about others being there.

Government

Those who remember and from writings left behind, the city used to be ruled by an entity known as the Queen of Pain. She also used to be able to keep gods out in some way. After Sigil appeared, she is nowhere to be seen. Gods can't enter the city, but that's because of the Second Breaking, not a force of the city.   At this point, Sigil consists of many different areas governed in various ways and the nature of the plane itself strives to keep the delicate peace between factions. Those attempting to attack enemies have discovered that their forces get lost on the streets and never reach their destination. Some are unable to get back home and die from starvation.

Industry & Trade

Sigil has few to no natural resources of its own besides its many gates. Instead, it is a centre of commerce between those who don't wish to trade on the home turf of their trade partners. It is also where one might sell truly unusual items to those extraordinary enough to appreciate them. This form of trade and the many arcanists who work here to study planes and gates makes Sigil reasonably affluent.

Architecture

The buildings here are incredibly varied. Some are made from clay, others from glass and stone. Some are tall and majestic; some are tiny shacks. Most of them are in styles that don't quite correspond to anything else used by known races, but a few arrived as almost exact replicas of existing buildings. In some parts of the city, there are lush parks, in others, the buildings are stacked on top of each other because of how over-crowded the area is.
