The house has many marks and scars that leave clear it's always been occupied by witches. Many rooms have signs of originally been "normal" rooms but slowly turned into utility rooms like a greenhouse, a lab, a library, etc. I haven't dared touch a lot of it, other than the bedroom —which I DID personalise—, even after three years. The most I've done has been organising the things in rooms in my own way.
Knowing that I used to work in a farm, one might expect that my speciality is related to plants. Couldn't be more wrong, I've grown to despise plants, although I grow some spices in the greenhouse for cooking. My speciality is runes. There's something that has grabbed my attention towards them as soon as I started learning about them and I haven't been able to let them go since then.
One of the first clients I had was a farm lad who had issues with their plants dying. He came to demand some spell to heal them. I refused and instead went to their farm and investigated what was happening. Apparently, they inherited the farm from their parents before they could fully learn how to properly take care of the farm. I taught them all I knew, and I still visit their farm from time to time and even help in it. Old habits die hard I guess.
People in town talk of the old witch in whispers. Don't get it wrong, they loved her, but she was wanted by some faction and thus they kept quiet about her, to not call the attention of whoever was searching for her. I don't know what happened with her, but for the villagers to still talk in such ways after three years? I'm probably better not knowing a thing.
Cleaning up, I found my old gardening tools. I brought them with me to this town because the previous town I worked at trusted nothing else than unguents and potions, so I had to do a lot of gardening. Thankfully, this town has been more open-minded and I've not had the need for them, which, after living out of plants all my life, has been a welcoming change. Their state is bad... but can be repaired, and while the gardening tools in this house have been enough for my spices, they are starting to break. Maybe I should start using these again...
Looking at the journal of the old witch —which is filled with notes about the people in town and tips and tricks focused on the town and it's inhabitants— I found a page I don't remember seeing before. It has a sketch of a woman and a child, and surrounding them there were loads of motivational sentences like "Do it for her". The more I learn about the old witch, the more I worry about her and the more I wish she has been able to find happiness again.
Something unexpected grew in-between my spices. In retrospective, maybe I should have properly emptied and cleaned the greenhouse before adding my spices' seeds. The plant that grew thanks to my hard work —that were for my spices— was one I knew. It was a flower often gifted to sick people in hopes that they get better. They don't have magical proprieties but tradition can be powerful magic too. Was the old witch sick? Or someone important to her was?
I'm SO excited for this project I've been working at! You see, the closest place to gather water for the house is in the town, and that's kinda too far. So... I've done an invention with a rain catcher and a water tank. On the rain catcher, I've added runes to make it attract water so it gets extra water when it rains, and in the tank? I've added runes to make it constantly move the water inside —to reduce the probability of water contamination by stagnation— and, my favourite part, runes that allows you to heat the water! Perfect for baths and warm drinks.
Deko, the gecko familiar —which it decided it was my familiar once I arrived— has been trying to teach me a new trick, but I've either been busy or it's performance anxiety has stopped it from doing it. Today, I've finally seen the trick! It has learnt to attach magically leaves to its frontal legs and fly with that. It said it figured how to do that after watching birds —so, that's why it's been spending so much time in the roof. Sometimes I wonder why I don't give it all the magical work, it is clearly much better than me at it...
One time, I was walking through the forest and I found a cracked stone filled with the best material to craft runes... and also a nest of small fae critters. It hurt my soul not gathering the material, but I couldn't leave them without a nest! Now, if someone found this nest, two things could occur: the critters, being inoffensive, can get injured or lose their home; or, the fae will curse the finder if they feel in danger. I made a protection circle around them so that no-one but me could find them. Hopefully, they haven't cursed me...
Someone from afar came for help. Their employer is deadly sick and they've sent the employee here out of desperation. Going to hep would mean leaving the town alone for a couple of weeks, but Deko the gecko tells me not to worry, that it will take care of things. I decide to go but not before making a list of things that Deko should be aware of, and packing a lot of different materials for whatever I might need to make. Many materials will probably go bad once I return but hopefully they'll help me with the sick man.
Rumours about me have started spreading outside the town. I don't mind, they aren't harmful and are mostly true, with the lied being irrelevant. The town-folk thought? They are trying to stop them, not because I asked, not because they don't want my services for them only, but because last time rumours started spreading about the old witch, she disappeared. I don't fear the same fate, I have nothing to hide and have no enemies or people that would wish me harm.
