Answer: The term 'uplift' is a simplified Terran translation of the Affini word {???????}; which in its original context can be more accurately translated as 'to endow with consciousness' or 'to bestow personhood.' The act of uplifting refers to taking a non-sapient specimen of flora, and using various parts of its genetic material to serve as a basis for affini neurological tissue (also known as core material.)
>>>TRIVIA: The term 'uplift' is also at times used to refer to the extraordinarily rare cases when a xenosophont has been transfigured into an affini. The majority of affini do not consider xenosophonts to possess personhood, and so the transformation from xeno to affini is considered to impart the capacity for moral action.
  > Query: How does an affini's species of origin flora influence them after uplifting; if it does so at all?   >Retrieving pertinent information...

Answer: The full scope of ways in which an affini core's neurobiology is influenced by its uplift species is at present not fully understood. It is generally believed that such effects do exist, but are minimal in the vast majority of cases; evidenced by the fact that affini as a whole still display largely uniform behavioural profiles in their first six blooms, in spite of being uplifted from trillions of different species of flora. The following is a non-exhaustive list of differences observed in affini that are thought to derive from their species of uplift:
  • Light level preference: Affini uplifted from fungi or other light-averse plants sometimes prefer to reside in low-light environments
  • Colour preference in forms: Affini often display preferences for displaying colours in their foliage that are present in their uplift species
  • Phytotoxin: Affini phytotoxins are known to be heavily influenced by their species of uplift
  • Shape preference: Some affini raised from creepers or other clump-forming species of flora have demonstrated an aversion to taking heavily compacted forms, and prefer instead to remain in a form which more closely mirrors the dimensions taken by their uplift species
  • Preference for sessility: A significant portion (>20%) of affini who choose to pursue sessile existences are uplifted from trees or other species of flora with particularly highly-developed root networks.
The most pronounced differences in personality and biology caused by uplift flora have been found in affini who have been uplifted from carnivorous plants. Some affini uplifted from these types of flora have been observed to display strong desires to consume meat and-or blood, and occasionally to possess reward systems with an unusual emphasis on behaviour revolving around the infliction of pain or discomfort.
