The Affini Compact is truly one of the civilisations of all time. In fact, I'd argue it is probably
the civilisation of all time; at least if the claims about its size and age are true.
According to what I've heard, the Compact spans multiple galaxies in its size. It originated somewhere called the Triangulum galaxy - which I've never heard of - from a part of it which the affini refer to as the Core Worlds, then spread outwards and conquered every other world in that galaxy before moving on to the next one. This began I think somewhere around 100,000 years ago? I'm a little hazy on the details, and it seems like a lot of affini are too. Given my culture's experience with
Data Loss, I'm not really surprised they might not have records going that far back. In terms of population, I literally couldn't even guess how many people are living within it. It's gotta be a lot more than trillions; quadrillions, maybe? ...What even comes after that? I don't know; the point is it's stupid big.
The affini are also supposedly a race of precursors, as implied by the 'became spacefaring before landamaeris had even involved into our current form' thing. Being insanely old comes with some fairly absurd technology - as I know from experience, having stolen some of it and destroyed more of it - and a superiority complex to match. From what I know, the affini basically seem to think they're the universe's divinely-assigned and biologically-mandated peacekeepers, and it's their job to take every xenosophont (meaning non-affini sapient) race in existence and turn them into their pets. 'Pet' in this case is meant in the distinctly sapients-doing-it-to-other-sapients way that I'm used to; by which I mean there's an awful lot of drugging, fucking, and general D&S stuff involved from what I understand. Except obviously, when they do it, it's a
lot more extreme than what even the kinkiest landamaeri has ever gotten up to.
Honestly, the Compact is the kind of thing that most people would see as a nightmare, post-scarcity utopia or not. There was a time when I saw it that way too, but fortunately I've had a lot of time to get used to the idea. It's important, as well, because both the hardest and most important part of dealing with the affini is overcoming the culture shock as fast as you can. Trying to treat them like regular people doesn't work; they are foundationally not, on any level. But if you can manage to wrap your head around how they think and how they act, they're not nearly so impossible to engage with as they might otherwise seem. Or so I'm hoping, anyway.
