Raqi looked forlornly at her screen.   There were some people, she had learned, that you just could not save. Sometimes, no matter how much love and affection you showered a person in, they were simply not in a position to accept it; and could only respond by running away. Sometimes, no matter how patient you tried to be with them, there was no way to get through to someone who had stopped wanting anything other than to cease to exist. It did not matter if you could promise to take their pain away, if they no longer wanted it gone in the first place, and now craved only nothingness.   You tell someone that you aren't angry at them, in spite of everything. Their mind responds by going "So what *will* it take to make her angry?", and they force themselves to keep being worse and worse; needing to find the threshold at which you'll break, at which point you'll finally start acting the way they've convinced themselves that you secretly are. Once they go down that path, there are only two outcomes: Either you break first, or they do. In the event that you stand firm against their every attempt to incite you, a moment will come when they realise they cannot press you hard enough to make you leave them. And that is when they will be forced to confront their fear, and to make a choice: submit and accept being cared for, or succumb and flee in terror.   The landamaeri fear response was a truly awful thing. There came a point in a sophont's existence where they became so damaged that they could no longer conceive that a person, however openly kind towards them, would not eventually turn on them and try to hurt them as others had in the past. When offered a kind hand, they would curl up on the ground and scream 'Please don't hurt me!'.   She didn't know what to do for those people. She didn't know if anything could be done for them.   Does there come a point where someone is too damaged to be helped? I don't want to believe that... but...   Slowly, she sat down, and pulled her knees up to her chest. She felt so tired. Why... Why can I never get through to anyone? Why is it so difficult... for them to believe that I care about them...   She felt... so tired.   Why... why...
