One of the biggest points of hypocrisy in Mobile Fleet culture is the legal stance on drugs. Virtually every single form of mind-altering substance is illegal here... except kasamotawa. Kasamotawa is fine: you can buy as much of it as you want, get absolutely shitfaced on it, ruin your marriage, die of organ failure, cause shuttle crashes; that's all A-okay. But buy some paliskachka- a drug well known for having its most severe side-effect being making you kind of a dumbass while you're on it- to smoke so you can relax at home, and you get thrown in prison.   This is fairly well-understood by anyone with a brain to be fucking stupid, but just, holy shit how is enculturation real? What I mean by this is, when I say 'anyone with a brain', I mean the minority of people smart enough to know how to post on the fleetnet. In terms of the kind of people you'd run into in real life, the approval rate for paliskachka is still only something like 53% on the Landamar. It's fucking crazy. Fleetgov just makes a couple broadcasts a year about "drugs bad (kasamotawa is fine though btw)" then has school teachers also tell people that drugs are bad, and they just eat that shit up completely non-critically and just, never make the connection that kasamotawa is also a drug.   I don't get this shit, man. Is this just a ch'ikan thing? Like, are all the people who do actually understand that kasamotawa is also a drug kuruki? I just do not understand how this isn't more immediately obvious to people- or, I guess what I mean is; why they don't question this stuff. The distinction between kasamotawa and other drugs became obvious to me the moment I realised there are illegal drugs less harmful than kasamotawa, and I never needed anyone to actually spell it out for me; but inversely, I can tell it to some peoples' faces, and they don't believe me? Never kuruki, though; it's always ch'ikan parroting the whole 'no drugs are bad ackshually because uhm, fleetgov said so lol' thing. Inos it's so hard not to feel like being susceptible to enculturation is a personal fucking skill issue   okay but like, let me actually lay this out properly. So the primary argument that fleetgov uses for incarceration/the existence of prisons is 'abubu criminals are bad and breaking the law is dangerous/harmful', right? Everyone who's actually looked into this knows that this is bullshit, because A) being gay used to be a crime and B) trespassing still is a crime. But like, ch'ikan have this mutual agreement going on where they all pretend laws are actually sensible and not arbitrary nonsense. Even within that though, the situation with drugs is just completely unhinged. Like, what is the actual justification for ormurrtsawa being illegal?   It's a drug that literally just conks you out for a day and makes you hallucinate wacky shit during that period. You are virtually incapacitated during it, so there's no way you can be a threat to anyone else (it's technically not impossible but incidences are so rare, and any time you read into them, it's a result of the person who took the drug being an idiot about how/when they took it; ie not doing proper set & setting protocol, having underlying conditions, yada yada.) It's pharmacologically non-addictive, and in fact, it gets less effective the more you take of it; so if you don't want to blow through your stash at the speed of light, you have to wait 14~ days in between every dosage of it. And by all accounts, the primary usage for it is fucking therapeutic. Like, people take this drug to get better, and there's an ever-increasing pile of research that it actually works for that purpose!   guess what people take to help with their mental illnesses that doesn't improve the situation at all, and in fact, makes it actively worse?   THAT'S RIGHT BABY IT'S KASAMOTAWA, THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS KASAMOTAWA   fleetsec literally just makes this shit up and no one questions it dude; like it's fucking insane. They just make a bunch of adverts in the 940s about 'this is your brain on drugs' and all the dipshit older generation eat it up without questioning it and spend the rest of their decrepit lives thinking paliskachka directly connects your brain to hyperspace and allows the Inos to bodysnatch you or some shit. Oh right, and there's also caffeine! So you know how people fearmonger about drugs being bad because 'muh addictiveness'? Try taking the average office worker's coffee machine away from them for a day, then put them out onto a random street and ask people to guess what drug they're suffering withdrawal from. I would bet you any amount of kmatli that 9/10ths of the people you asked would name a hard drug and quite possibly none of them would suggest it's just coffee withdrawal   People act as if caffeine is harmless to get addicted to, but that's only because it's so easy to acquire that they never have to go without it. And also, it's possible to end up drinking so much of it that it can have debilitating long-term effects on your health, same as kasamotawa. but that's okay because it's socially acceptable to be addicted to it and also it makes you more productive so who even cares am i right
