The data loss took place 939 years ago, and it marks the start of the Post Data-Loss calendar. It is- was, I guess?- pretty much the defining event of pre-modern Landamaeri society, because apparently we were dipshits and didn't keep good non-electronic records, so after it happened, we lost virtually all information we had about what life was like before then.
Or, well- from what I know it's actually a bit more complicated than that. Apparently we did have some pretty good non-electronic records, because contrary to what I just said we were not actually
that stupid, but they all got destroyed somehow as well? The circumstances behind how they got wiped out aren't actually known, and it's the kind of thing you hear a lot of conspiracy theories about. Everything from 'xeno infiltration', to 'intentional government sabotage', to some sort of massive chain-reaction catastrophe on the island ship that had all of our paper backups.
Some of the earliest still-functioning island ships, including the
Gliese and obviously the
Landamar, are from the pre-data loss period; so we know for a fact that we were already spacefaring before then. Other stuff, such as where our home planet is located, or what it was like, or why we moved off of it and into space, we can only guess at.
