Answer: All affini are created with high innate levels of neuroplasticity within certain parts of their cores; specifically the regions responsible for their domineering drives. When an affini is subjected to a member of a previously unknown xenosophont species for the first time, they will unconsciously begin creating associations between the body language and biorhythmic fluctuations of that xenosophont in a process called 'pattern matching.' Through this process, they will rapidly develop an unconscious understanding of which changes in internal rhythm and external behaviours are representative of different emotions. Although the purpose of the Affini Compact is commonly described as ensuring the happiness of all xenosophont species, this is not strictly true. It has long been agreed that maximum happiness - 'happiness' being described as 'high levels of ecstasy and/or physical pleasure' - can be optimally achieved through the use of class-O xenodrugs; which are nevertheless seen by most as undesirable. Instead, most affini develop individual ideas of what constitutes 'happiness'/'wellbeing'/an ideal state for a sophont to exist in, and this is commonly individual/varies by the xenosophont.

Example #II: In what some may see as contradictory with the Compact's stated goals of reducing harm, some affini greatly enjoy inflicting both pain and terror upon their florets. While many florets either innately enjoy or are made to enjoy these experiences, this is not true of all pets, and some are allowed to continue finding them unpleasant. In these cases, the floret in question's owner may believe that they benefit from genuine unpleasantness in moderation; such as for disciplinary purposes, or more rarely, as a method of achieving personal growth. Xenosophonts with complex trauma and-or psychological issues may also find genuine pain to be grounding, and fear can be a powerful bonding tool in certain races.
Affini are capable of receiving reward incentive triggers from both inflicting pain upon and inducing fear within xenosophonts. This is possible due to the subjective way in which affini reward incentives are designed; with triggers being based on an affini's perception of what is desirable for a sophont, rather than being innately tied to positive reactions from the sophont- although the two are commonly linked. Barring exceptional cases such as the above, the majority of affini experience rewards by inducing positive emotions and physical responses in xenosophonts; commonly happiness, joy, pleasure, submission, obedience, and ecstasy.
