Common Taboos

The Dokkalfar are taboo. For a human to see one means that their ancient foes have returned to prey upon them. When they appear, it is understood that they are harbingers of death, usually for the one that sees them.

History

Once among the greatest kindreds of the Fae, the Dokkalfar dwelt high in the mountains and deep beneath the stone, fashioning great kingdoms and mighty citadels, in which they lived as mighty and beautiful giants. The center of their kingdom was the Dreughold and it was to there that they first welcome the arriving mortals, delighted at these newcomers and their strange ways. Yet they grew proud of their own superiority over the mortals and began slowly to enthrall them through glamour and grammarie. They enslaved the humans, keeping them as servants and pets, leading to many of what are now called the Elfen, those who are half-Fae and half-mortal. Yet, eventually, they were undone by one of their descendants, Cruithne Cruithson, in The Dreughold Rebellion .   Their power was broken in the conflict, their Stone-Lord was slain, their warriors devastated, and their reputation forever shattered. Their power was expended in the conflict and they were driven out into the wilderness and the distant remnants of their former kingdom.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The other Fae and the mortals all look down on the Dokkalfar. To other Fae, they are considered an embarrassment and a reminder of one of the most shameful defeats in their entire history. None of the Dokkalfar are welcome in the other Faen courts and they have been driven out into the wilds of Laeonesse and the most inhospitable parts of the Fey itself.   For mortals, the Dokkalfar are hideous, repulsive beings that would enslave and devour them with relish. As such, they abhor the Dokkalfar and will always respond with violence first in any encounters. Indeed, some of the more valiant of the Laeonessai lords have been known to host great Dokkalfar hunts, to drive them away from human-inhabited lands, and bring their remains back as prizes.   Given these views of them, and remembering their lost glory, the Dokkalfar return the hostility, viewing other Fae as traitors who abandoned them, and mortals as usurping theives. As such, they are often violent towards all who do not belong to their own kindred.
