Dragon's Festival Tradition / Ritual in Hesli | World Anvil

Dragon's Festival

Every year on <date> the Mountain Dwarfs hold the Dragon's Festival. During this day, they dance, sing and drink asking Ormsli to bless their furnaces and forges with the eternal fire of the dragons.   The planet Ormsli is still surrounded in myth and legend. The Tale of Ormsli says that this is the planet where the dragons live. Their fire is so powerful, it could run for eternity. Over time, the dwarfs have developed music and song around these legends to continue to tell these stories. Furthermore, they use them to ask the planet of the dragons to bless their furnaces and forges; a prayer to another safe and productive year.

Origin

The true reason for the festival is different. It is suppressed by the eldest among society to keep worry away from the mountains. They have twisted the myth to the stories they are today. The original myth tells about the planet being the home of the dragons. After The Draconic War, the dragons have died off. However, word spread around that they might still be residing on Ormsli. The dwarves introduced the festival as a prayer for another safe year, safe from the dragons and their fire. Over time, they changed the story to using the dragon's fire for their forges in hopes for a great year of production and prosperity.

Activities

Just like most dwarves, a party or festival isn't great unless they can drink gallons of ale and along with that comes dance and song. The festival site becomes one gigantic pub, essentially. The younger participants play classic dwarven games like Find the Nugget and Chug the Mug during, while the adults cheer them on. At night, the party starts for them.

Oh the difference between the original story and what it is today is very interesting! Was there a conscious decision by their politiciens to change the story one day? What made them do it?

The ancestors of the dwarves used to be "slaves/peasants" when the dragons ruled the world, doing a lot of manual work to maintain the world. Even though they were protected by the dragons, they saw a lot of horror and try to suppress that part of their history. After the draconic war, they truly became free from the rules of the dragons. Or so they think... ;)

It's an interesting twist! Usually, dragons and dwarves are depicted at being at odds. I like the twist, and those classic dwarven games sure do sound very Dwarven :D

Interesting festival! I was a tad confused as to whether dwarves see dragons as a positive or as a negative thing (and/or whether this has changed through history). I think a paragraph or two clarifying this may be a great addition to the sidebar.

Thank you! The dwarves see the dragons as a negative thing, because it reminds them of their enslavement. However, I can try to clarify and flesh that out further in the article to avoid the confusion. ^^
