The Black Sea teaches us all one great lesson in life: the weak die and the strong survive. None of my kin will go quietly to our deaths, we will fight until there is nothing left to give.

General Knowledge

The Tritons are among the most skilled warriors and well-trained arcanists in Haven, found in scatted enclaves beneath the waters of Haven. They are best known for natural affinity towards magic and their unique appearance, some appearing more fish than man.   Tritons are most commonly known for caring for and watching over the numerous shrines and alters to Shadiym that dot the coastlines of Haven. The most well-known group of these Tritons live in Helmont or more specifically in the underwater caves beneath it where a thriving realm beneath the sea has formed. Few take the trip to their underwater civilization but stories speak of a realm of lights and life entwined with civilization.

Tritons are on average shorter than most humans but years of swimming through and mastering the oceans leaves adult Tritons athletically muscled and built to survive crushing pressures. Their skin ranges from greys and blues to green and silver while sporting diverse fish like appendages and growths, making a Tritons appear more and more fish-like as they age. All Tritons sport versitile fins that fold out from their arms and/or legs giving them their gift for rapid movement through water.   While on land Tritons don't often struggle as much as one would think, but many Tritons who have spent their lives' underwater find life on land an arduous task.

All Tritons sport a pair of gills either on their neck or on their torso that allow them to breathe underwater. There are some Tritons who have gone their entire lives never seeing the surface but chooses to embrace the dark depths and plunging deep into the waters of Solith.

Aquatic Lords

Over their long history in the sea Tritons have grown to be lords of their underwater realms becoming innately connected with the creatures that share their watery realms. Tritons who master this art are rumored to even be capable of inhabiting the bodies of other creatures.

Uncommon Knowledge

Mystically Gifted

Tritons are so naturally inclined towards magic you are likely to find more sorcerous bloodlines and warlock pacts within their lands than anywhere else in Haven. Their skills at manipulating the weather are legendary and are only part of the reason their Preservers are charged with the upkeep of Shadiym's shrines.

Hunters of the Deep

There is no race in Haven that delves as deep into the Black Sea as the Triton and they bare scars to prove it. Enormous sea monsters and vicious sea creatures threaten the Triton way of life every day even before the plague of undeath washed across the land. As they always have, Triton learned to adapt beyond their limitations and survived the harsh waters of Haven. Even going so far as to harvest its mystifying treasures.

A Life Beyond This Wretched Plane

Tritons believe that when they die their spirit ascends into the heavens to join the sun in its great journey. In the times before the fall, Triton dead were given over to the ocean wrapped in seaweed but after the undead curse began such rituals are long gone. Now, dying Triton and those magically preserved or otherwise retrieved before undeath sets in are given over to the strange Suneater Clam. Within the clam's massive jaws it is believed that the soul of a Triton is consumed, merging with the clam and living on within it. The Triton maintain that when the undead plague finally leaves the land they can free the souls of their kin and release them into their proper place in the heavens.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Most triton names have two or three syllables. Male names typically end with a vowel and the letter s, and female names traditionally end with an n. Tritons use their home protectorate as a surname, with the name formed by adding a vowel followed by a "th" to the end of the protectorate's name.   Female Triton Names: Aryn, Belthyn, Duthyn, Feloren, Otanyn, Shalryn, Vlaryn, Wolyn Male Triton Names: Corus, Delnis, Jhimas, Keros, Molos, Nalos, Vodos, Zunis Triton Surnames: Ahlorsath, Pumanath, Vuuvaxath

Average Technological Level

The Triton have found ways to blend life with industry to create a strange harmony. Tools of formed coral, enchanted bone and many other mysterious substances harvested from the dark depths. Their armor is often formed from shells, chitinous plating, woven seaweed, and scales. Magic plays a key role in their world and is central in almost every aspect of their civilization.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Tritons collectively speak a shared tongue commonly known as Primordial but those who speak it can easily recognize its cultural dialects: Aquan, Auran, Ignan, and Terran.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Outsiders entering a Triton settlement should not attempt to engage with townfolk before receiving the blessing of the settlement's leader or elder. This practice is often referred to as the walk of penance, a practice dating back to the age when Triton's first began to walk the ocean floor. Many Triton families practice a similar smaller tradition when inviting strangers into their homes and it is viewed as insulting to not bring a host a gift.

Lords Beneath the Waves
