What Lies Beneath

What Lies Beneath is what the Cahnru and Bahn call the creature that haunts the deepest depths of the world. A nameless darkness that wipes out dwaves that wander too far down the forgotten paths. Survivors noticed creeping black tendrils of smoke or mist or flame that advanced on their companions enveloping them and causing them to disappear forever. Light inside the tendrils caused a thunderous explosion leaving behind crystals imbued with the power of Shol. Those brave or foolish enough to retreive the crystals soon found out that such explosions caused a hightened concentration of faster shadows to assemble guided by the sole purpose of swallowing up the meddlers and retrieving the fallen Shol shards.
Bahn priests have for thousands of years maintained that What Lies Beneath should be left alone. Some claim this is because it guards something holy and not to be disturbed while others say that something so destructive must be evil and is too dangerous. There is a third group that believes that What Lies Beneath is a force for good, at the very least indirectly, because it guards something more evil from getting out.
Cahnru Scientists and cartographers have concluded that it appears to surround the core of the planet. Expiditionaries with no success have searched for a way to breach or bypass What Lies Beneath to ascertain the truth. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to wander too far beyond it's realm as if bound to it. The Dwarves are grateful for this because What Lies Beneath has never been permanently slain in any encounter and the Cahnru are uncertain if it can be.
