Clothier

Clothiers make, repair, and alter clothing and armors consisting mainly of cloth. The best clothiers have a firm understanding of the use and and application of Threadmancy, utilizing magic to improve their final products.

Career

Qualifications

Clothiers require skill with needle and thread, and a creative vision on how to utilize their available materials to achieve their visions. Those with the most aesthetic or unique applications of their craft tend to become well known, their work sought out by the fashionable throughout Fillimet.   Most successful clothiers are also skilled in Threadmancy, allowing them to alter the basic features of their products by changing their basic properties.

Payment & Reimbursement

Clothiers are typically paid for their products or their time. Most accept commissions for items of clothing or armors, as well as requests for repairs and maintenance or alterations. A clothier would require compensation for each of these tasks.

Perception

Purpose

Clothiers construct, modify, and maintain the clothing required by most of society. This includes everything from everyday attire to formal wear. Some also include other cloth items in their list of services such as blankets, cloth wraps, and even bolts of cloth.   Cloth-based armors and other protective gear are also manufactured by clothiers and typically require more Threadmancy in their manufacture. Some articles also incorporate the use of runes although this is relatively rare. Clothier-produced protective wear is available for an assortment of professions and technologies including Alchemists, Healers, Metalsmiths, Leathersmiths, Miners, Battle Mages, and Chefs.

Social Status

Particularly skilled clothiers are held in the highest regard among socialites due to the value of fashionable clothing and other high end cloth items among those who wish to freely display their wealth. Competent clothiers are well regarded among their communities.

Operations

Tools

Needles and thread remain the most essential and basic tools of a clothier. Most also carry measuring cloth, pins and a pincushion, and at least one high quality pair of scissors.   Depending upon their work they may also own more specialized tools such as spinning wheels, looms, or stretching frames. Some use specialized needles for crafts such as knitting or crochet.   Those who create or modify garments will also own several adjustable modeling forms representing the body types of their typical clientele. High end forms will typically include runes that can apply different environmental or biological effects to outfits to test quality and durability.

Materials

Clothiers require plentiful stocks of threads and fabrics, as well as dyes to recolor their fabrics. Many also require adornments for their designs such as sequins, beads, buttons, or any other items they wish to incorporate into their designs. Those weaving bolts of cloth for protective purposes frequently also keep threads of Tyrellium to intertwine with their fabric threads.

Workplace

Clothiers may set up shops where they display their wares but most prefer the ease and comfort of performing their sewing from home. This is likely due to the fact most clothiers do not require large equipment and merely need an organized location for their tools and materials. Those who require weaving looms and other large pieces of equipment are more likely to rent a shop or workshop.

Provided Services

Clothiers are best known for designing and sewing clothing, but they have a variety of additional useful skills to offer. Alterations and repairs are the most common business requests for the average clothier, while others may weave tapestries or craft cloth-based armors. Blankets and other cloth-based products are also available from clothiers who decide to perform those services.

As usual, I love it!   So, given what a Clothier makes with Threadmancy, would there be a steady call for Clothiers to make protective gloves or aprons for practitioners of electromancy? You know, to cut down on the danger? Or would that interfere with the ability to cast electromancy?   I definitely am wondering if Clothiers make aprons and protective gear for Leathermancy practitioners!

I had originally included a mention of weaving Tyrellium into things but pulled it out because I couldn't get it to read right.   I have since had a nap, though, and will shortly get some time in the car on the way to a New Years party, and you ask some good questions.   Watch this space.

Thank you. <3   I do want to dive into specific items someday, but that's low on the priority list. Sometime after I define the rest of the magics.
