Woodspire and The Great Northern Forest
The northern mountains are known for their cold isolation and desolation. Crowning the frigid plains of the Urdaggar people, they are beautiful, but not in the way most people would think of it.
Small forests dot the northern mountains, but only one forest ever bore the name of “Great.” That was the Bolzoyet Yoorgen Deragahk, The “Great Northern Forest.”
This forest stretched from the doorstep of Deragahk Tazamstil - Woodspire - in the east to nearly to Uzihmrihd Bahlehn - Emerald Bluff - in the west. The forest was thick with ancient evergreens that reached the sky like the mountains that framed them. It was a hilly, rugged, and cold forest.
The Kuzaarik of Woodspire logged in the Bolzoyet Yoorgen Deragahk, building up their city and making it unique among the Kuzaarik City-States. Before long, they attracted the Lightbringers, those Kuzaarik sworn to Gamoo and to assisting the other races in whatever way they needed.
The Lightbringers moved their headquarters to Woodspire. From there, they operated for generations, going into the world to bring the best of Kuzaarik culture to the rest of the world.
As time went on, however, the Kuzaarik began to change as a people. The logging operations in the Bolzoyet Yoorgen Deragahk got out of control, taking more and more timber each year without letting the forest heal or trying to replant it.
So much timber came out of the forest that it began to shrink considerably. The Kuzaarik of Woodspire started living outside nature that had cradled their civilization. It did not go unnoticed.
As the rest of the Confederation crumbled around them, Woodspire seemed least affected. The thermal vents that powered the city had not begun to cool. Its wealth was larger than ever before, and the leaders of the City-State began to think they would last forever, even as the City-States to their west were dying.
Alas, their confidence was found wanting. The logging activities of the Kuzaarik had raised the ire of the Forest’s guardians, the Golats. One fateful day, as the Kuzaarik went about logging in the forest, the trees twisted magically and spewed out an assault force of Golats and their Trilian allies.
The assault force quickly despatched the loggers, who could not raise the alarm fast enough to warn the city of its impending doom. The assault on the city was brutal. The Kuzaarik defenders put up a valiant defense, but they were no match for the enraged Golats and the swift-flying arrows of the Trilians.
The elite troops of the Woodspire, the Barkguard, held off the assault while the civilians escaped into the mountains. The Barkguard was decimated but held long enough that the majority of Woodspire’s civilians fled the slaughter.
Their journey west through the icy mountains was treacherous. They died of exposure, disease, and hunger. They were hunted by Vekul who were emboldened by the survivor’s weariness and weakness.
Finally, the survivors made the gate of Vinyabah Gohrahd. There were so few left. Woodspire and its people had for all intents and purposes ceased to exist.
