War Spider Species in Faelon | World Anvil

War Spider

Sub-species of this frightening beast are found in various wild reaches of Faelon, but the most numerous clutches of them set trapdoors for the unsuspecting throughout the central Dorsang Danar. Resilient, surprisingly agile and possessing both a venomous bite and an ensnaring web, a single War Spider presents a formidable threat. In numbers, they can prove ruinous. Even more terrifying, some clans of the Urdaggar Spider Tribe have learned to tame them and ride them into battle, and it is from this that they have gained their name.   https://dgsgames.com/war-spider-new/

War Spider   My Queen, Here, for your perusal and at your request, is my treatise on the War Spider with some anecdotes from my own travels to supplement it. I hope you find this tome useful in whatever you endeavor with it. When most of Faelon mentions a Titan Spider, this is to what they refer. The War Spider is to be found in the mountains near the Urdaggar Lands of the Spider Tribe. What can be said of these creatures? It is hard to separate myth and legend from fact when it comes to them. Some say they have heard them speak with the tongues of people, while others claim they have seen them fly. One thing for certain is that the very sight of them will turn your stomach and fill you with either hatred or abject terror. They differ from other Titan Spiders. They are keenly intelligent in the way of people, not falling into habit or instinct, but seeming to think through situations and adapting readily. They travel almost knowingly to places where the locals worship them. They make greedy and debauched overlords, demanding constant sacrifices to them. They are not the only ones who benefit from those relationships, however, as when the Spider Tribe goes to war, the War Spiders go with them. Some act as mounts for their agile and gaunt warriors, while others just crash into battle alongside their worshippers, tearing enemies asunder and poisoning them with their bites. The joy with which they seem to kill may just be the most repugnant thing about them, my Queen. War Spiders don't just hunt for food; they hunt for fun. Their appearance is strikingly different from the other Titan Spiders of the world. They get their name from the plates of thick chitin that line their body. Striking it has been likened to striking stone, precious metal, or even bone. Their carapace often takes the colors and textures of those materials before it is painted upon by the Spider Tribesman, as is their custom. Therefore, War Spiders can be found in almost any color or combination of. There are those Shadow Hunters that swear the War Spider is a demon, or at least part demon. The bond they share with their Jhenkars would seem to indicate that they would know of which they speak, but it has not been confirmed. The truth is that this rumor has been whispered for years. While it would explain many of the bizarre traits and behaviors of these loathsome creatures, it may also be just that; a way to explain what we do not understand. And with that, My Queen, this small treatise comes to an end. I am honored that you would trust my travels and research to the point of requesting this small look at such a loathsome creature. I pray to Vidunar that for whatever reason you need it, it is sufficient and then some. Teren Lorel Court Naturalist
