The Grey Veil

Koronna has vast tracts of land perfect for crops, and the only significant woodland areas are in the north near the Bar Nol. Though the mostly level ground is very arable and produces fantastic crops, it is tough to patrol and keep safe from bandits and the ever-present specter of Traazorite invasion.   Cavalry played a considerable role in the rebellion that finally broke the yoke of the Traazorite occupation of Koronna. Koronna recognized their need for cavalry early in their existence and quickly established both light and heavy cavalry formations when they created their army.   The Grey Veil tradition existed before Koronna was free from the Traazorites. In those days, communication between the different groups of insurgents was almost impossible because of the Traazorite military presence. Communicating between rebels in town was difficult, and it was nearly impossible between cities.   If the Koronnans were to have any hope of throwing the Traazorite occupiers off balance long enough to start a country-wide rebellion, it would take coordination. The disparate rebel cells needed to communicate with each other freely.   Hence the Grey Veils were born. The Grey Veils were lone couriers that braved the occupying forces under the light of the twin moons. The Traazorites patrolled at night, but they were much more superstitious about the dark and more careless.   Grey Veils used the Traazorites religious superstitions against them. Slipping through the darkness to deliver messages between towns, the Grey Veils were the missing piece of the puzzle that allowed the Koronnans to rise against their oppressors and throw them out of their country.   In 86, the Koronnans declared their independence. The war to dislodge the Traazorites was cruel and protracted. The Traazorites were retreating across Isarshael, and there was no help to send to the garrison in Koronna. Eventually, the Traazorites could not hold onto their colony and the Koronnans celebrated by becoming their own country.   When it came time to establish their military, Darza Shadi, leader of the rebellion in Aseldam, suggested that the Koronnan military enshrine the Grey Veil tradition. The founding leaders of the uprising agreed, and the Grey Veil became synonymous forever after with the branch of Koronnan Light Cavalry responsible for scouting and harassing the enemy.   The Grey Veils take their heritage very seriously. Every year, they celebrate their founding day with tales of the original Grey Veils and the singing of “The Moonslight Ride” by renowned Koronnan bard Jamur Letrik.   The Moonslight Ride commemorates Grey Veil Kesha Zomen. She ran the gauntlet of Traazorite Troops between Kel Dashir and Mulaslen when rebels in Kel Dashir learned that the Traazorites had gained knowledge of a planned attack by forces advancing from Mulaslen. The Traazorites had lured the Koronnan forces into an ambush that may have destroyed the fledgling rebellion. Kesha was wounded twice trying to break through the Traazorite lines but continued riding, allowing herself to succumb to her wounds only after she warned the forces advancing from Mulaslen.   Grey Veils are experienced horse people, and they are swift and maneuverable. They act as scouts and harassers for the Koronnan army. The Grey Veil still ride alone or in pairs as they patrol Koronna’s landscape, keeping the roads safe from bandits and making sure no wild animals are running amok.   Of course, the real threat is a Traazorite invasion, and they happen about once a century. In the meantime, small groups of Traazorites occasionally infiltrate the countryside and cause whatever trouble they can, hoping to keep the Koronnans chasing shadows until they next invade and finally take back their land.   Grey Veils harass the enemy during battle. They charge into battle, forcing their enemy to react and form against them. Once their enemies have committed, the Grey Veils will unleash a flurry of arrows into their enemy and then retreat just as quickly as they came.   Grey Veils also use their bows to shatter the shields of infantry formations before their brothers and sisters attack. Riding towards enemy lines, Grey Veils fire their arrows down into their enemies, cracking shields and breaking lines before the rest of the army’s attack crashes into their opponents.
