Tangler Profession in Faelon | World Anvil

Tangler

Few things inspire fear, like the giant spiders that inhabit the mountains of the Dorsang Danar. Most people have an irrational fear of the minuscule spiders that inevitably creep into houses and surprise them at the most inopportune times. Every child in Faelon can recite the list of venomous spiders that live around their homes.   However, the War Spiders that live in the mountains north of Haradel are the stuff of nightmares. The spiders are the sacred embodiment of Ulalim, the Totem god of the Spider Tribe. The residents of Northern Haradel live in constant fear of the creatures, who sometimes come out of the mountains during lean times and prey upon livestock and people in the plains below the Dorsang Danar.   Spider Pass, a high and dangerous passage through the Dorsang Danar between Haradel and the lands of the Urdaggar, is riddled with the dens of these horrific creatures. Only the brave and those on quest venture through that terrifying place’s rocky gorges and narrow haunted corridors.   But that is just where the Spider Tribe lives. They venerate and celebrate the giant spiders and live wherever they find them. The warriors of the Tribe even take on aspects of the spider’s behavior, using it in combat to destroy their enemies.   One of these warriors is the Tangler, a Spider Tribe warrior that has adopted her Totem god’s ability to entrap their victims in a sticky web and keep them alive for feasting later. The Tangler carries both a net and a ripper.   She can entrap her prey with her net and practices being as accurate as the sacred spiders with their web-spinning. The ripper is a fearsome weapon with serrated edges that tears at its opponent, leaving horrific wounds.   The Tanglers are held in high regard by their fellow tribespeople, and they have a special place in the culture of their people. The Tanglers gather food for spiders that the Tribe builds their homes around.   Most Clans will find a Spider Warren, usually deep within a cave. The Clan’s Vola - Mystics - will commune with the creature and declare whether or not the beast is an acceptable Adash Tirgoya - Spider Avatar - for the Clan. When Ulalim - The Shackler - leads the Clan to the right warren, it will settle down around it and worship what they believe is the living embodiment of their Totem god.   In the case of the Spider Tribe, worship means to feed. The goal of the Clan’s worship is to make sure the spider can reproduce freely, creating colonies of giant spiders that the Clan uses to ride into battle and also for things like poison and even armor, which they make from molted pieces of spider chitin.   The Tanglers are responsible for capturing and bringing food to the Adash Tirgoya, who becomes increasingly bloated as she fulfills her duty as queen of her broods and is adoringly lavished with live victims by her sycophants.   The Tanglers become adept at live-trapping, as the Adash Tirgoya will only eat fresh, living meals. Their nets are made from spider silk collected from within the warren, and its sticky, fibrous ropes are too strong for most teeth, claws, and blades to cut against.   The Tangler uses these skills on the battlefield, confidently throwing their net at just the right moment to entangle their foes. They are also nimble like the spiders they emulate, developing senses like they have several pairs of eyes. Their abilities are referred to as Adashve Ma’aksal - The Spider’s Dance.
