Eclipse Void Agents in Faelon | World Anvil

Eclipse Void Agents

Many people across Faelon use magic. What they do with that magic will depend greatly on where the person was born, who discovers the gift, how early, and how that culture feels about the use of magic.   Some lucky youngsters will be identified early and sponsored into one of the great schools of magic or taken into a religious institution to develop and control their magic. Others, whether because of their culture, the stigma attached to casting, or their personal choice, will ignore the gift to live a life unobstructed by the burden.   In places where the culture abhors magic, youngsters often try to suppress their magic. They hope others will not mark them as foreign or dangerous because of their gift.   Women are not allowed to practice magic in Traazor. According to Runaic traditions, only males are to practice magic. Women who exhibit magical qualities or refuse to suppress their magic will often disappear. An elite group of Traazorite magic users known as the Revelators hunt and capture female magic users, which they call Sahizel, or witches.   Most people in Traazor understand that women don’t use magic. It is often harder to convince the provincial territories where there have been millennia of tradition built upon female practitioners. There will always be those with the gift who try to keep their magic a secret or openly use it in rebellion against the Traazorite Empire.   There are many groups in active rebellion against the Traazorites across Ryshael. The Eclipse is perhaps the most famous and widespread, getting support from foreign governments who are always eager to keep the Empire off-balance.   Sympathizers from the other countries will smuggle the notorious Suneaters into places where they can receive formal training in their void magic. For their part, the Koronnans have set up entire camps to train Eclipse fighters and magic users. So have the Mershael.   Provincials will often rely on their magical heritages to train casters for the fight against the Traazorites or try to keep with their people’s rites and traditions. These brave women work to hone their skills under the very noses of the Traazorites. They are in constant danger of discovery by the Revelators.   Some women born with magic never get to develop it, perhaps because of oppression and maybe because of the lack of opportunities. This undeveloped magic is often referred to as Wild Magic by those at universities or schools of magic. Some local customs will name it differently according to their traditions.   Some of the women with Wild Magic can take what they do know and weave it into the tapestry of their everyday lives. Perhaps the mugs at the tavern they work for are always frosty, or their bakery’s ovens never go cold.   Others, though, especially those fighting the Empire, can use this wild magic in combat. Women with magical abilities are already more likely to join the Eclipse or other rebel groups because of how the Empire treats them.   The Eclipse is happy to put women with Wild Magic to use against their shared enemy. Being able to wield magic and specialize in other combat forms can be very useful for a tiny rebellion.   The Eclipse will often employ women with Wild Magic as Agents. Agents are unique fighters who are both scarce in numbers and able to do significant damage to the Empire when employed. Agents are tasked directly by Eclipse leadership. They will not answer directly to a local Nemesis and her cell but will be attached to them temporarily as part of a larger, more coordinated plan by a regional leader or even by the Blademother herself. Often even a cell’s nemesis may not know what mission an Agent is supposed to accomplish, and they know better than to ask.   Fortunate is the cell that has an Agent as part of their long-term team. More isolated cells may find themselves in this situation. A recruit may have the gift of wild magic and use it locally before the regional organization recognizes them and calls them to bigger things.   Sometimes, but not often, a group of Agents with different magical abilities coalesces for challenging assignments. If you ask a member of the Eclipse, such groups do not exist, but neither do Agents. Traazorites refer to these gatherings as Sujaza or covens.   The Eclipse Agents wear the name Sujaza with pride. The idea of a group of highly trained magic-wielding agents stalking their troops petrifies the Traazorites. They will often refer to female magic-users as witches and attempt to rally public sentiment against their existence.   When the Traazorites captured a high-ranking Sunshadow Councilwoman in the port city of Geersada, a Sujaza was assigned to break into the prison and either free or kill the council member. The group, aided by the diversion of a local Eclipse cell, was able to free the Councilor and several other Eclipse fighters.   One type of Agent is the Void Agent. The Eclipse treasure void magic because it stands in opposition to the sun and because it is advantageous against the heavily armored Traazorite forces that the Eclipse has to fight.   The Void Agent uses her natural ability to bypass the enemy’s front line and strike at her chosen targets. Her Wild Magic allows her to aid her sisters, stripping away armor and rendering enemies unable to react to the Sisterhood’s attacks.   The Void Agent’s ability to lend void magic to her weapon or weapons of nearby sisters makes her very dangerous on the battlefield. Her void blade nullifies magical defenses and compromises armor, allowing her comrades to deal with the heavily armored Traazorites more easily.   The Void Agent excels at getting into places that a group of Eclipse would have trouble infiltrating. They often act alone to carry out high-profile assassinations or cause other mischiefs as part of a larger strategy to paralyze and weaken the Empire’s ability to fight.   When working with a local cell, Void Agents lend their limited magical abilities to aid their sisters and take out essential fighters such as Sunbringers. Void Agents have a fearsome reputation for killing Sunbringers on and off the battlefield.   The Void Agent is another way the Eclipse is turning a millennium of oppression against the Traazorites. Women persecuted for gifts they were born with or who have hidden their entire lives now have an outlet to strike back against their oppressors.
