Dragons

The Dragons   Of all of the Azal, the denizens of the other reality called Karelon, by far the most studied, discussed, debated and feared are the dragons. Dragon, like demon, is a common word. As with so many things, they first received their names from the Krai-jan: Vazarjekai, which translates roughly to king-energy-lizard. The first person to encounter a dragon did not survive the experience. The Krai-jan warlock Argakeen opened what was at that time the largest witchgate ever attempted. Expecting his binding spell to allow him to control whatever came through, he attempted it on Katharanal, the Dragon of Ice, only to be flash frozen and then eaten for his efforts. One of Argakeen’s apprentices had the sense his master did not and hid immediately as the dragon crossed over. He would go on to make the study of dragons his life’s work, though he studied them from afar.    The Vazarjekai are immune to most attempts at binding. In their world, they are apex predators, each having carved out a territory that divides Karelon into nine realms. The fact that there are nine known dragons and each is tied to one of the nine energies lends support to the theory that the Gaal play a role in Karelon as well. But even now, two thousand years after Argakeen’s failed experiment, so little is truly known.   Dragons have entered Faelon only one other time in history. Desperate to hold off their inevitable conquest at the hands of the Traazorites, Krai-jan sorcerers attempted to harness the power of two of the dragons and instead caused the Cataclysm of -553, destroying two cities and laying the surrounding provinces to waste. Rumors abound that a way to control the dragons has been devised and that this power may rest in the hands of the Great Khan of the Grular, but such rumors have come and gone over the years and have all resolved into stories to frighten children.   What little we do know includes the names they have been given, the energy to which they are bound and some of their locomotive and destructive capabilities. Here they are.   Thrakansor, Dragon of Fire, is winged and breathes flame. He is colored in red and orange.
Katharanal, Dragon of Ice, is winged and breathes frost. She is white and grey.
Volash, Dragon of the Sky, is winged and breathes lightning. She is several shades of brilliant blue.
Arazakan, Dragon of the Sea, has legs only and breathes poison gas. She is a deep aqua green in color.
Baravael, Dragon of the Earth, has legs only and spits acid. He is bronze in color.
Shelevar, Dragon of Stars, is winged and breathes aether. She is silver.
Umbrax, Dragon of Illusion, is winged. No one is quite sure what form his attacks actually take. He is rumored to be a striking mix of violet and black.
Durnaal, Dragon of the Void, has vestigial wings that shift it in and out of the void. He is black in color with an orange underbelly.
Qasirun, Dragon of the Cosmos, is winged and pulses cosmic energy. He is a deep golden color.
