The Gravelanders

People of the flooded swamps

This article is a stub. Please comment if you would like it to become a priority for expansion.
The Gravelanders are a group of humans that live in the swamps known as the Gravelands in western Kaien. To outsiders, they are considered to be Kaienese, but the Gravelanders consider themselves as separate and not beholden to Kaienese laws.   Gravelander settlements are constructed on stilts to account for the changes in water levels over the different seasons, and often are built in such a way as to camouflage them within the surrounding trees. To cultivate crops, they have created floating fields that rise and fall with the water.   They have elaborate rituals surrounding birth and death, and consider the endemic bog deer to be sacred.

I really like the idea that they think themselves as totally separate to the Kaiense. Do they have any laws about outsiders culling/hunting the bog deer?

It's highly likely you would find yourself on trial if you did.

there must be a story behind why the swamps are known as the Gravelands - I'd love to know what it is!
