Scholars Gate Settlement in Erdengard - The story | World Anvil

Scholars Gate

Zion is known for their temples giving out free food to those who need it, regardless of class, race, religion, etnicity etc.   Reasons for this is due to their Deity: Lena the caretaker. The main commandment is to take care of each other and to cherish life.   The food they hand out is paid for by donations and by the city. The city has an investment in making sure nobody goes hungry; this way the unrest that is caused by hunger and underfed people is reduced to a bare minimum. Although homelessness does exist within Zion, it is at such a low level that it is hardly noticeable.   At times, food runs low. The head worshiper has been gifted with the gift of conjuring food for all those present. The food, while filling and nutritious is the same food every time. It's not that the food is bad, if anything it's actually surprisingly good. But still, the same food every day does still grow weary on even the hardest of people.   And then there was the Traveler. He called himself a Prophet, of a deity. He would not say which one, other than calling him the Traveler. Saying that there was no need to feed people, that they should be left to their own devices. Why would you feed those who can't even take care of themselves?   It had little effect on the city itself. After all, the city was very reliant on the temples to feed those who had no means to feed themselves, as in return there was a strong need for simple tasks. Clean the city, fix holes in the streets, but also more hard labor jobs such as working on the fields. As the people are taken care of so well, they hardly if ever refuse. It is rare, but it happens. When such an occurrence happens, they are then send to the temple. Never violent, but the thoughts of why it happens are investigated. They somehow will always end up doing their civil service, but if they are truly still the same person remains to be considered.
