Exhaustion System

In Dystopia Rising Maryland, Exhaustion is a scale used to measure the exertion a character places on themselves throughout an event as they interact with various elements such as ZoMs, items, skills, abilities, effects, and so on. Much as stress on the mind can cause one to eventually develop Fractures, stress on the body causes Exhaustion over time. You obtain Exhaustion by interacting with these components and lose Exhaustion gradually (5.0 Levels each 12s), or by interacting with other components that specify removing Exhaustion. The more Exhaustion your character has, the more limited the Exhaustion System elements are that your character can interact with.

Currently, Exhaustion is an optional system that you can opt to engage with or not. It is by no means required to enjoy a full Dystopia Rising LARP experience, but we think it enhances and bolsters the experience for those who wish to interact with it, so we encourage you to give it a try. If you choose not to, you may simply ignore any mechanics or items that cost or grant Exhaustion, and gain no benefits or penalties from either. A Player that chooses to engage with the Exhaustion System must engage with it for the entire Event on all of their Characters, however.

Below are the rules for how to engage with the Exhaustion System, followed by some examples of mechanics your character might be able to engage with at a Dystopia Rising Maryland event.

Rules

  1. At the start of an event you begin with 0 Points and 0 Levels of Exhaustion (unless another effect states otherwise).
  2. At the top of every 12s, when you would fully refresh your Mind points, you also remove 5 Levels of Exhaustion.
  3. 10 Exhaustion Points equals 1 Exhaustion Level.
  4. Exhaustion Levels are indicated with whole numbers, for example 1.0 or 7.0
  5. Exhaustion Points are indicated with remainder numbers, for example 0.3 or 0.9
  6. An Exhaustion Total is read with both the Exhaustion Level and Exhaustion Points, for example 3.7 would be Level 3 Exhaustion with 7 Points of Exhaustion.
  7. Exhaustion is cumulative, for example if you have 2.8 Exhaustion and gained 5 Points of Exhaustion your Exhaustion Total would now be 3.3
  8. Different ZoMs, items, skills, abilities, and effects can potentially interact with Exhaustion, give you Exhaustion, or even take away Exhaustion, please keep track of your Exhaustion on the provided sheet at check-in and be on the lookout for fun opportunities. Living in civilization is exhausting, we encourage good sportsmanship with this system and fun roleplay (eg: ham it up).

Examples

Zone of Mechanics (ZoM)

Trackless Wasteland

Area: All gameplay areas not enclosed by the Settlement Perimeter.

Beyond the walls of the settlement, few protections exist. Many Bailey Citizens go much of their entire lives never even crossing the walls of their own towns, much less beyond the Walls of Dominus Columbia.

PFA: Wasteland Stalker

While within this ZoM, a Wasteland Stalker may take 30 Points of Exhaustion (3.0 Levels) in response to a call of 'Never Here' from a Target within their Line of Sight in order to follow the Target as they escape. Both players will be removed from the scene by a Guide, and set up elsewhere in the Wasteland for a Dramatic Showdown! The Wasteland Stalker can not use this ZoM if they have 6 Levels of Exhaustion or higher.

C'mere!
  • You may take 5 Points (0.5 Levels) of Exhaustion at any time to point to an Undead or Raider target and call "Line of Sight - Psionic Compulsion: Attack Me, 1 Minute!" This effect lasts until the target takes damage or is affected by another negative effect by another source other than you, or one minute has passed.
You can not use this ability if you have Level 8 Exhaustion or higher.
