Session 17: Storm the Castle Report

Report by Campaign GM Shiftrex

General Summary

The party had successfully liberated the Night Guard commander from his cell and they spent a little time investigating the rest of the dungeon. They puzzled over two strange areas, both made of the same type of stone that made up the door that kept the Night Guard commander in his cell. They deciphered two cryptic messages, the one over a smaller stone yielded a small flute that held an enchantment for a calming magic. The other led to a cavern with natural walls that seemed to be rather new when compared to the rest of the castle. A magic, Transportation circle was at the bottom of this chasm. They decided to use a low-level spell from Alexander Cross to hide their Warlock in that room so he could watch over the area.   They snuck Zandar to one of the towers along the wall of the courtyard and he rallied the soldiers of the Night Guard under his command, turning them against the cultists that were formerly guests within the castle as he proclaimed his loyalty to the Lord of Kestel. From there the party decided to storm the gates with Zandar and the Night Guard. Most of the party decided to move through the great hall and skirt around a pitched battle but Zandar and Reinys climbed on top of her white dire wolf and plunged into the fray. They turned the battle heavily in favor of the Night Guard and they all ascended the staircase. Zandar described the layout of the second floor and their need to reach the third where the Lord's quarters were along with his "advisor" the dark cleric. Reinys, Cross, and Zandar went up the main staircase while Craea, Narrin, and Zalkin took the alternate route towards a short-range teleportation circle.   The first part of the group fought through a horde of undead on the main stairs, the second part of the group fought a collection of cultists and Zalkin was almost taken captive. The party arrived on the third floor and surrounded the remaining forces that included the dark cleric, a cult leader, some cultists and the Lord of Kestel. Zandar called out to the lord and he exhibited immense confusion and seemed to be in pain and a fight ensued. Elemental panthers were summoned and the battle was nearly lost until Alexander Cross stepped forward and cast Time Stop when time resumed the cultists were piles of ash and he held the lord's amulet in his hand which promptly turned to dust. The dark cleric declared that the lord would die without his life saving amulet and then he cast a channel divinity to momentarily stun cross before retreating past Narrin and Zalkin to the teleportation circle. The part was left with the lord, feverish and unconscious and the dark cleric escaped in the confusion of the battle but things returned to the control of the Night Guard led by Zandar.
