Optional Rule: Multiattack Penalty
Summary |
Every time you Attack, your next consecutive attack on the turn gains a -3. After that, it becomes -6, then -9. It does not get lower than -9. Additionally, each attack only costs ◈.
Attacks made with Agile ⚙️, or the Off-Hand Attack from Dual-Weapon Fighting only lowers the counter by -2.
How it works
The more Attacks a creature makes beyond their first in a single turn, the less accurate they become. This is represented by the multiple attack penalty.
The second time a creature attacks (as in, when the dice is rolled for their attack), the attack has a take a -3 penalty to the roll . The third time they attack, they take a -6 penalty to the roll. On the fourth attack and onward, it is a -9.
Abilities (such as maneuvers or attack based spells) are affected by the Multiattack penalty, but do not build it. It is encouraged that a creature with a high MAP for the turn does something else with their remaining Actions.
Note: While using this rule, all Attacks use 1 action / ◈, and cannot be shortened or lengthened by spending more actions as per normal CHASE rules
Impact
The rule is made to keep characters from "going nova", or to prevent characters from spending dumping resources at the start of combat. It is also meant to encourage variety of actions and use resources to make each attack worth the investment.
The downside is that it may not feel fun the first few times a player "wastes their actions" trying to attack. Furthermore, there may be better ways of encouraging or informing players to use their actions and resources in other ways.
To this end, it's not a 'bad' rule. If it was, it wouldn't be available as an optional rule for those that enjoy it.
