Drengr

In the foggy town of Aethelham, deep in the heart of a thick dark forest, word spread of a strange group of cultists travelling from town to town. Led by an enigmatic figure known only as Odin, the cultists had a mysterious mission to fulfill: to return to glory the ancient worship of their leader’s namesake.   Word of their approach came through the taverns and causing quite the stir amongst the townsfolk. Rumors circulated that their mission was to spread chaos and disorder. But no one was quite sure what the cultists were up to, or why.   Some of the more superstitious folks of Wellford were certain the cultists were to test their faith to the new deities of the region: Eostre and Tyr. Other were more skeptical, believing that the cultists were merely misguided idealists full of youthful exuberance, and finding their way in the world.   In either case, the cultists seemed intent on their mission and made no secret of it. Everywhere they went, they spoke of their devotion to Odin and the freedom of chaos. They promised those who joined them great rewards if they embraced their cause and returned to the old deities.   The cultists’ mission was certainly strange, but even the more level-headed people in town were concerned. No guidance had come from the capitol nor the High Priests and only the worship of Hel was illegal. Slowly, more people joined their ranks, eager to follow Odin into a new future.
Forced to hide in the mountains, the people of Thunderhelde maintain the old worship of Hel Goddess of Death and Pestilance who protected the Helcynngae Peninsula against outside invaders. Despite her banishment, her influence is growing as her devotees cling to her as their only hope against a harsh and merciless world.   To gain more followers, they created a new rank in the church: Drengr. Those cunning enough go undercover to test who among the Heldring would be amenable to a return to the old ways. Under the guise as a cult of Odin, they travel from town to town and plant seeds of doubt against the new deities. Once they have gained complete loyalty from their mark, they reveal their true intentions: restoring Hel to power and removing the taint that the invader’s gods brought to this land.
