Abysthor, the Last Great Priest

Abysthor, that great cleric of Thyr and Muir - God of Justice and the Goddess of Virtue and Paladins. Though he had the unfortunate gift of being a church leader while their deific powers waned. The Twin Gods were brought to Akados by the Hyperboreans and have waned in the 1,000 they retreated back to Boros in the far north.
The Muir and Thyr churches in Bard's Gate were lead by Abysthor for decades. The Valley of Shrines was great complex where heroes lay interred, done with the proper rites. Pilgrimages were once made frequently. But the people of Bard's Gate were following the Hyperborean gods less and less. Choosing gods focused on arts and revelry, much easier than following the strict commands of Muir and Thyr, both unforgiving gods. As followers and donations waned, maintaining the Valley was unsustainable and Abysthor made the difficult decision to abandon it.
20 years ago was when he was last seen. After years of intense prayers he said he received a vision that the glory of Muir and Thyr would be reborn once he returned from his quest. He set out to perform some ritual on the Valley of Shrines but never returned. Many priests followed his path but they too never returned. Now that area has a new name: Stoneheart Mountain Dungeon. No more is it considered hallow land.
Decades after his disappearance Abysthor still uplifts the faithful and stories are still told extoling his wisdom by then ew high priests. Bofred the Just knows that faith will provide. No matter the struggle, no matter the pain, no matter the sacrifice. When we push ourselves to the limits of our faith to do what is right, the gods provide. He and Barahil the Faithful, high priests both, formed the Order of the Sword of Retribution to begin a crusade to recover the great temple complex that now lay abandoned to the forces of Chaos. And once that is done, the Order has much work ahead of them to eradicate Orcus once and for all.
