Greshan III

Greshan III (born William Maxwell Lynch) is the King of Apreas, and its 3 protectorate nations. He is also the claimed Emperor of Apalareas, although this claim is not recognised outside of the Kingdom of Apreas, and is directly opposed by the claim of the Appalachian King, Lucius IX   William was born in the Wickerdon Palace, on Avanor, the first child of King Kahlar V and Queen Anastasia. When he was 3 years old, Queen Anastasia - his mother, would die giving birth to a daughter, whom she named Evelyn. Kahlar was immensely affected by the death of his wife, and began to take out his anger on William and Evelyn. Luckily for the two children, their favoured uncle, Nicholas Atkins - youngest brother of Kahlar, protected them as best he could. On several occasions even having to physically restrain his elder brother.   Kahlar's anger only grew as time went on. In the final fight they would ever have, Kahlar came very near to killing Atkins, leaving him bloodied upon the floors of the Wickerdon Palace. This fight at last broke the King, and he retreated to his personal quarters in seclusion. An hour later, a gunshot was heard in the palace, with servants and guards arriving to find the King dead.   At the tender age of 7, William was crowned King of Apreas and its three protectorates, the Kingdoms of Araya, Echodia, and Asray, in a mighty ceremony on Avanor. He would take the name Greshan, after his great grandfather. Atkins was named as the regent in Greshan's name. When he turned 18 in 4761, he took over the duties that Atkins had been performing in his stead. In recognition of his good service to the crown, Atkins was granted the title Lord of Batical, and remained an important councilman in the King's court.   Despite his short reign, Greshan has already proven himself a important leader. With his ascension, monarchist beliefs in Apreas have only risen, despite being on decline for the last few centuries. The Alliance with the Federation of Anfieden and Allied Planets, which had been near destroyed during the reign of his father, was re-established. Greshan has surrounded himself with the best the Kingdom of Apreas has to offer, and he intends to bring Apreas to the forefront of Galactic Politics.

Early Life

William Maxwell Lynch was born at midday, on the 16th of February, 4743, to King Kahlar V and Queen Anastasia, two years into Kahlar's reign. He was born in the Wickerdon Palace's medical ward, at the specific request of the King. Named William after Lord William Marindon - a close friend of Kahlar who had recently died, Maxwell after Anastasia's father, and Lynch after Kahlar's grandfather.   On the 19th April, 4746, tragedy would strike the royal family. Queen Anastasia, William's mother, would die in childbirth, while the King was off world. The Queen's doctors had a choice, to either save the Queen, or her unborn daughter. With the King uncontactable, the head doctor - Henry Martin, chose to save the child. Before the operation, the Queen was able to deliver one final word for the doctors to hear, "Evelyn", which they understood to be her preferred name for the child.   By the time word was able to reach the King, the Queen was already deep into a surgical procedure, and by the time he was able to arrive back to the palace, the Queen was dead, and Evelyn, Princess of Apreas was born.

Heir Apparent

A day after the Queen's death, Kahlar managed to return to the palace. Upon seeing the body of his wife, he flew into a rage, even ordering for the imprisonment and execution of Martin - although his guards refused to follow this order. Knight Commander of the Guard Cayden Connell eventually managed to calm the King, and get him to rescind the orders he had given to his men.   Even so, Kahlar's anger only grew as days, then weeks, months, and years all passed by. This anger was directed primarily upon his daughter - Evelyn, who he saw as a murderer. William while still young, knew this was wrong, and constantly pleaded with his father to take better care of his sister, although this was always in vain. The children's only solace was the presence of Nicholas Atkins, and Connell, who both did their best to protect the prince and princess from the anger of their father.
Kahlar and Atkins would constantly fight over the next few years. With the King seemingly becoming more and more incapable of doing his duty. A fierce argument between the two was also recorded by a nearby servant, with it making its way to the Apreasean media soon after. The servant was fired as soon as word reached the press, but it was already too late, as the incident was reported on all major and most minor media platforms. The Royal Family expressly forbid any News Network from airing the recording, however only Nationally controlled News Stations listened, and even they soon played the recording.   The recording taken by the servant, while a terrible blow to Kahlar's image, proved a great one for William's, and by association, Atkins. In the recording, a young child - William, could be heard, pleading with Kahlar to stop hurting him and Evelyn. Just a simple sentence, completely lost Kahlar most of his support among the populace, with many now feeling affection for his son.

Even still, Kahlar would hold the throne until William was seven years old. However, on the 15th of April, 4750, Kahlar and Atkins would engage in their most ferocious fight over the last half decade. The result of which led to Atkins being horribly injured, with Kahlar even stabbing his younger brother. Immediately after, Kahlar would retreat to his private quarters. Meanwhile the servants and guards were busy trying to keep Atkins alive long enough for Medical units to arrive.   William was watching the ambulance depart, when he, and Connell who was standing nearby, heard a single gunshot from inside the home. The young boy and his sister were taken to their rooms by a servant, where they waited for what seemed like hours. Eventually though, Connell came to see them, where he then told William that he was now King.

Reign

Accession & Coronation

Nearly a month after his father's death, William's coronation was held. The seven year old William had chosen the Regnal name "Greshan", after Evelyn had suggested it to her elder brother. The name was shared by the pair's great grandfather. William was formally crowned by the High Squieal, Austin Harris, in the Grand Madenith Cathedral, where upon he became formally known as King Greshan III.   The next day, Greshan would appoint Atkins as his regent - who had by now recovered from his injury. A small council would also be formed, but due to Apreas' status as technically being a constitutional monarchy - even if the King still did retain most of his powers, the members of this council were mainly comprised of former advisors to Kahlar, many of whom had no official power.

Regency

In the wake of the regency, the government, led by Prime Minister James Fergus, began to take over many of the powers that the King still had over the government, the most important of which was Greshan's ability to veto any political appointment with or without a reason.   In order to curtail any more Governmental movements towards a Republic, Atkins would attempt over half a dozen lawsuits, calling the Government, and Fergus' actions thus far, illegal. Much of the controversy that would surround these lawsuits was around the power that Atkins could wield as regent for Greshan, and that the Apreasean constitution was very unclear on the powers that the regent actually held.   The law was so unclear, that the lawsuits would last throughout the Regency, with seemingly no-one sure on the current powers of the Monarchy and Government, and how they interacted with one another. Many called for an amendment to the constitution, but this required the support of the King, but as Greshan was a child, and Atkins was the reigning regent, this would only serve to complicate matters further. So the situation stood, for the next 11 years, until Greshan's 18th Birthday, where upon the regency ended, and Atkins no longer held any power in the debate.

True Rule

On his 18th Birthday, Atkins relinquished his regency powers to Greshan, making him truly the King of Apreas. Another ceremony - smaller than Greshan's coronation, was held, this time in the Wickerdon Palace, with Atkins crowning the King rather than the High Squieal, although the priest was still present. The ceremony was mainly restricted to members of the extended Royal Family, although important Government figures, such as Prime Minister James Fergus and Lord Secretary of State Killian Hargreave.

Greshan's early rule was ripe with speculation on the lawsuits between the Royal Family and the Government, and what power the young King actually still held. Greshan has declared the law changes under Fergus' Government in relation to the Royal Family null and void. Fergus and his supporters finally gave in, with it not being seen as worth it, especially with the new King's popularity, gaining him many supporters.   Fergus and Greshan still have an uneasy relationship, with the older Prime Minister often vocally voicing his republican beliefs, much to the distaste of Greshan. Nevertheless, the two have managed to work together on several occasions, and many describe the two working in tandem to be a force to be reckoned with, with their unmatched popularity and political skill.

Renewed Alliance with the Federation

For the past few decades, and last two Kings, relations with the Federation of Anfieden and Allied Planets had been becoming increasing volatile. Greshan, much of his court, and the Apreasean Government all knew that the alliance with the Federation must hold, or else the Kingdom of Apalachi and the 4th Empire of Jerace would be able to completely overwhelm either nation. However, disputes on trade, territory and the exact nature of their alliance, led to the Federation slowly drifting away from relying on Apreas for it's western defence.   Tensions reached a boiling point with the outbreak of the Federation-Jenmoreneat War. Believing that Apreas should support the Federation in what they saw as a defensive war, the Federation Navy repeatedly requested the aid of their Apreasean counterparts, especially supplies for the Federation Army troops fighting on the ground. However, following a Governmental vote, Apreas refused any part in the war effort, seeing the conflict as an internal matter for the Federation to deal with.   Having no power to directly send troops to the Federation's aid, Greshan instead had to deal with the matter diplomatically. Alongside, Fergus, Greshan would travel to Envis to meet with President of the Federation Liam Black. This initial meeting went well, and Greshan made several appearances to the populace, where he was seen as a celebrity, and well celebrated, although several notable politicians and political analysts wondered why the Federation continued to associate with a Monarchical nation, as their prime rival for sole galactic supremacy with the 4th Empire of Jerace, itself a Monarchy. Despite some criticism, Greshan's visit was seen mostly as a positive for both nations, and both governments were already getting back on track for a full alliance.   When back on Avanor, Greshan made an impassioned speech to the members of the Government, just before they would vote a second time on military intervention in Jenmoreneat. This speech is generally regarded as the primarily motivator for the substantial "Yes" vote win. With Apreasean troops now fighting alongside their Federation brethren, Black would officially approached Greshan with a plan for a new, much stronger alliance between the two nations, which the King would relay to the Prime Minister and his Government, who were quick to accept. A possible galactic catastrophe for both nations having been averted.

Current Day

Greshan continues his reign as King of Apreas. While it is as of yet unclear as to the threats he must one day face, what is clear is that the young king will do whatever is necessary to ensure the survival of Apreas. Alongside his sister, and Prime Minister Fergus, Greshan is sure to have a long reign that will revitalized the Kingdom, and bring it to even greater heights.

The Apreasean Royal Family

The Apreasean Royal Family comprises the King of Apreas and their close relations. By Apreasean law, members of the Family include the King, Queen, sons and daughters (and their descendants), and the wives and husbands of those included in the Royal Family. The monarch's parents, brothers and sisters, uncles, and aunts, along with their descendants, are not considered part of the core Royal Family, instead falling under the Extended Royal Family.

The head of the Royal Family is the King or Queen (whichever is the senior partner). The duties each members undertakes is generally by the grace or command of the monarch as each member of the royal family is considered an official delegate of the King or Queen. Extended Royal Family members must be especially careful with their actions, as it is much easier for the monarch to denounce them, as it would be to criticize a core member of the family.

King Greshan III is the current head of the Royal Family. The current Royal Family is one of the smallest of the last few centuries, as the King is young he is yet to find a spouse and have children, and with both his parents dead he is the only member of his Royal Family. In order to rectify this situation, Evelyn, Princess of Apreas - his younger sister, and Nicholas Atkins (and his wife, Catherine Atkins, along with their two children) - his uncle, are currently considered part of the core Royal Family. Atkins and his family are the only ones to perform royal duties, as Evelyn is considered too young. Rumours begin to circulate as to whom will take the place of Queen of Apreas, with many eagerly awaiting the King's wife.
